Electrical problems don’t always start with something dramatic. Often, your home will give you small warning signs that something isn’t quite right.

Keep an eye out for:
⚡ Lights that regularly flicker or dim.
⚡ Power points or switches that feel unusually warm.
⚡ Buzzing, crackling or humming sounds.
⚡ A burning or unusual electrical smell.
⚡ Discoloured or scorched power points.
⚡ Safety switches or circuit breakers that keep tripping.

If the power only seems to trip when one particular appliance is being used, there’s a good chance the appliance itself, or the circuit supplying it, needs attention.

It could be caused by an electrical fault within the appliance, damaged wiring, moisture, an overloaded circuit, or an earth leakage fault triggering your safety switch.

Repeatedly resetting the switch and trying the appliance again isn’t the best solution. If the same appliance consistently causes the power to trip, stop using it until it can be checked.
A licensed electrician can determine whether the problem is with the appliance, the power point, the circuit or the electrical protection itself.

Your safety switch trips when it detects electrical current leaking to earth, and if it keeps happening, there’s usually a reason.

They might sit next to each other in your switchboard, but they have two different jobs.

What actually causes a power point to feel warm? 🔌🌡️

A power point can feel warm for a few reasons, including high electrical loads, loose connections, worn components or a fault within the outlet or wiring.

While a small amount of warmth can sometimes come from the appliance or charger itself, a power point that is noticeably hot, discoloured, smells unusual or continues getting warmer shouldn’t be ignored.
