A well-planned grocery cupboard makes the weekly shop easier to unpack—and makes it much easier to see what you already have.
For a full-height pantry, we’d usually start with around 4–6 adjustable shelves and 2–3 pull-out drawers. The right number depends on the cupboard height, width and what your household buys.
Pack it in zones:
• Top shelves: lightweight items you rarely use.
• Eye level: breakfast foods, snacks and everyday ingredients.
• Middle shelves: tins, jars, pasta and baking supplies.
• Lower pull-outs: heavier items and bulk groceries, where you can see and reach everything without digging to the back.
Keep the things you use most within easy reach, group similar foods together, and leave enough height between shelves for your actual containers. Those small decisions make a pantry work better every day.
