There it is. Extension lead out the laundry window, through the gutter, taped to the fence, plugged into the same powerpoint as the beer fridge.

“It’s charging but.”

Yeah mate, it’s charging like a bloke filling a pool with a water pistol. Those little cables in the boot are for emergencies, not every night. And running it through a cheapie extension lead is a good way to end up with a very warm fence.

Put a proper wall charger in. Four hours instead of four days, and it stops when it’s full instead of cooking your powerpoint.

Some of them will even run off your solar. Sun’s out, panels are pumping, nobody’s home using it. Instead of selling that power back to the grid for stuff all, the car just quietly drinks it. Free kilometres off your own roof while you’re at work.

Had a look at a switchboard yesterday that still had ceramic fuses in it. Little clay carrots with a bit of wire wrapped round ’em.

Bloke goes, “she’s been sweet for 40 years mate.”

Sweet until the toaster carks it at 9pm and you’re in the dark with a torch in your teeth winding fuse wire, while the missus asks if you’ve got it yet.

Swapped the lot to RCBOs. Now one switch drops instead of the whole house. Flick it back up, go to bed. Done.

Big one though: an RCBO cuts the power fast enough to stop you getting killed. Fuse just heats up the nail that grandpa put in there for you 15 years ago.
