Your aircon shouldn't "run out" of refrigerant.

If the refrigerant level is low, there's usually a reason, most commonly a leak or refrigerant loss during a previous service.

Here's the thing: refrigerant isn't like petrol. It doesn't get used up. A properly installed system runs the same refrigerant around in a closed loop continuously. If it's low, something has gone wrong somewhere.

Here's what's actually happening inside your system:

The refrigerant enters your indoor unit, absorbs the heat from the air in your room, and carries it outside. The compressor pushes it through, the heat gets released outdoors, and the whole cycle starts again. It's essentially moving heat out of your home, not creating cold air.

When there's a leak, there's less refrigerant doing that job. Your system runs longer trying to cool the room, your power bill creeps up, and if it's left too long, the compressor can get damaged.

It's not something you just top up and move on from. It needs to be properly diagnosed and repaired by a licensed technician.
