It’s difficult to catch this roof in a photo. The blue wrapped form will be copper clad.

Rolling curves and edges will - once the copper patinas - disappear into the bushland setting. Minimising need for maintenance in coming decades.

The curved form softens the roof, avoiding straight edges and straight shadows.

Found objects, finding a home.

The finishes for this room are designed and crafted from materials diverted from waste streams from this project.

The design is grounded in the history of this place - so that it tells its own story. Rather than importing a story from others: a magazine or tv show.

Our clients and the builder embraced the process: salvaging, storing and moving materials during the build to allow this to happen.

Our design takes roof tiles to make walls. Bricks to make floors. And timber from the original home re-milled to make doors and cabinetry (underway)

Matching strip drain Stormtech Architectural Drains

Pendant light was salvaged second hand.

We challenged ourselves to build the smallest bathroom, as this pavilion was prefabricated and brought in on the back of a truck.

It is a good challenge for us as architects (and home owners) to test - how much is enough?

A wall of books in a compact bedroom, loved by a voracious reader more than a larger room would have been.

A small bedroom by today’s standards but still large enough to grow to hold a queen size bed.

The bookcase by is standard plywood (CD grade) and more economical and more beautiful than building a bigger room.

Small moments affordably created from “waste”.

The vanity is an older piece of furniture made by Peters grandfather for his barbershop in rural Queensland in probably the 1940s.

Overhead was furniture from Peters parents place, over 50 years ago.

The stories behind these items mean more to us than new pieces of furniture could. And they were “free” discards when the family moved on.

Architecture sometimes feels directed towards, and afforded by, only those with bigger budgets. This can create stunning buildings and experiences.

However it misses the mark for most people, and loses an opportunity to help shape more lives.

We’ll share a few little images over time which show spaces which try to focus more on what matters for those who need more, for less.

Though of course if you have a bigger budget we’d love to talk to you too!

Renovation in a bushland setting.

The home is light, warm, and feels generous - though it remains compact by modern Australian standards.

This allows the owners to achieve a higher standard of build for the same budget, including double glazing and other design elements.

So they can remain more comfortable, in a healthier home.

Lovely new images of this home renovation on the Gold Coast.

Our design created a light filled home centred around the core of the original home. And dedicated ramped parking for the electric scooter!

Low ceilings in the original home, with wrapping bullnose awnings, kept the home dark and cold.

The new home is cooler in summer, warmer in winter - generous and sun filled. It achieves 9 out of 10 stars for energy efficient thermal comfort.

The roof catches both sun and water to help the self sufficiency of the home.
