Can you actually picture your finished home?

One of the hardest things we ask clients to do when building is to imagine something that doesn’t exist yet.

You can choose a beautiful benchtop.

A beautiful cabinet colour.

Flooring you love.

Tapware.

Tiles.

Paint.

Lighting.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean you can picture how all of those individual decisions are going to work together in the finished home.

And most people can’t.

That’s completely normal.

It’s why our selections and design process is about more than handing you a catalogue and asking:

“Which one do you like?”

We bring the selections together into a cohesive mood board, then use 3D renders to help you actually visualise the finished spaces before we build them.

It means we can look at:

* colours and undertones together
* cabinetry and benchtops
* flooring and tiles
* fixtures and fittings
* proportions and layout
* how different materials transition between spaces
* whether the overall home actually feels like the vision you started with

And importantly, the client, designer and builder are all working towards the same outcome.

We’re not relying on three different people having three different pictures in their heads.

The decisions are made.

The selections are documented.

The vision is clear.

And everyone knows what we’re trying to create before thousands of dollars of materials start being ordered and installed.

Because changing something on a mood board or render is relatively simple.

Changing it once it’s been ordered, delivered or installed can become very expensive.

Good design isn’t just about making a home beautiful.

It’s about removing uncertainty, reducing costly changes and giving our clients confidence that the home they’re imagining is the home we’re actually building.

A good extension shouldn’t look like an afterthought.

At our Innes Park project, the existing patio was removed and we’re creating a substantially different outdoor area with a new trussed structure, reroofing and new trussed roof.

We’re not finished yet!
Painting and final detailing are still to come.

But this stage shows something finished photos don’t:

the work required to make new construction belong to an existing home.

Roof lines. Structure. Connections. Proportions. Weatherproofing.

The pretty part comes later.

It’s 3pm and I feel like I’ve already lived three days.

Some Mondays are productive.
Some Mondays are just survival with a spreadsheet. 😂

Monday started with the turkeys out, the bull crushing the fence and Dave repairing it at 6:30 in the morning.

Then one of our guys called in sick.

I was getting the kids fed, Dave fed, the washing on and trying to get out the door for appointments.

Then I had to rush home for a new enquiry call.

Then another enquiry came in.

Then the actual business day started.

Books.

Emails.

Organising trades.

Client budgets.

Approving bills.

Contract paperwork.

And now it’s three o’clock.

I’ve still got a little more to do in the office, then I’ll pack up, make dinner, spend some time with the girls and check the animals haven’t staged another escape.

And when Dave gets home?

He’ll plaster and paint the last bedroom upstairs in the Barndo.

Then build the wardrobe.

Then put the floor down.

And then we can finally move in.

This is the bit you don’t see in the finished photos.

The business.

The family.

The farm.

The house.

All moving at the same time.

Somehow, we keep going.

Our Barndo | Cabinetry Install

This is the stuff you don’t see in the finished photos.

When your wife designs the cabinetry and you’re the bloke who has to install it… 😂

The cabinetry is finally going into our own Barndo, and Dave’s taking you behind the scenes of what actually happens during installation.

This is the part of building a home that rarely makes the pretty interior design photos.

Things aren’t always perfectly square.

Walls aren’t always perfectly straight.

Plans and drawings eventually have to meet the actual building.

And that’s where experience on site matters.

Rachel looks at cabinetry and thinks about how we’re going to live in it, storage, function, clutter, where everything belongs and how the room will feel.

Dave looks at the same cabinetry and thinks about how it’s actually going to fit, work and be installed properly.

Two very different brains working on the same house.

And occasionally arguing about it. 😂

We’re getting closer to the stage I’ve been waiting for, when this giant shed starts feeling less like a construction project and more like our home.

It’s the little things you don’t think about until they become a problem. 👀

Something a little unconventional we added to our client’s kids’ bedrooms, door stops for the wardrobe doors.

Why?

Because kids aren’t exactly known for gently opening doors. 😂

Without them, the wardrobe door can swing open and the handle hits the wall.

Then you’re left with dents, holes, patching and repainting.

Did it cost a little extra during the build? Yes.

But that’s how I look at design:

Spend a little more now when it can prevent unnecessary damage, maintenance, money and frustration later.

A good home shouldn’t just look beautiful on handover day.

It should be designed for the people who are actually going to live in it.

And when those people are kids… we design accordingly. 😂

Before practical completion and handover, I like to come through the project with a fresh set of eyes.

Our trades and team have been working in these spaces every day, so naturally they become very familiar with the job.

My role at this stage is to look at the home differently, as the client is about to see and experience it.

I’m checking finishes, small details, presentation and anything that may need a final adjustment before handover.

It’s not about finding fault.

It’s about giving the project one more independent quality check before we say it’s complete.

Because sometimes a fresh set of eyes notices the little things that are easy to become accustomed to when you’ve been looking at the same space every day.
