As a general rule, septic systems should be pumped out at least every 10 years.

There are a few reasons your system might need attention earlier:

💧 Winter flooding – Excess water can put extra pressure on the system and affect how well it operates.

🌳 Tree roots – Roots can invade pipes, tanks and leach drains, causing blockages and damage.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 A growing or large family – A standard system may struggle to keep up with increased usage and may need upgrading.

🕳️ Collapsed leach drains – Over time, leach drains can collapse or become damaged.

🏜️ Not leaching into the sand anymore – If the ground can no longer absorb the wastewater properly, the leach drains may need replacing.

Ignoring the warning signs can lead to overflowing, unpleasant smells, wet areas around the system and a much bigger problem (and bill) down the track.
