106 | Our Director - was part of the Region 2024 Conference at Marvel Stadium two weeks ago.

As always at industry events, the content got us thinking... what are we doing, how are we having an impact; and how can we share knowledge to help local governments in their quest to provide for their communities.

A couple of takeaways:

1. Engagement
The make-up of project groups to deliver projects is super important. A good blend consists of project managers and design professionals (not just architects); Council Officers, and club stakeholders who are 1) trusted by their group, 2) have an ability to think beyond their own patch, 3) can input code-specific technical knowledge, and 4) have the communication skills to take project detail back to their groups.

2. Collaboration
Sharing knowledge at the very early stages is key. We say this a lot, but can do better. Get the end user and maintenance team(s) onboard early - they have nuggets of great information to share, which will bring efficiencies & financial savings to the project.

3. Growth Corridor Challenges
Growing cities and municipalities are facing difficulties in determining the need & implementation programs amongst timelines & funding. We saw some great examples of cross-LGA collaboration and strategy work that may help provision of facilities - one particular piece took out a gong (Regional Partnership of and for the Regional Community and Recreation Needs Assessment for the Cloverton Metro Activity Centre).

4. Research
Research & data is gold to support change. Katie McDonald PhD is making waves in this area.

Great work Dan Ferguson and all Council members.

106 | Sport & Community Projects

As a small business that has spread into AU from NZ, we are incredibly proud of the projects we have led, particularly over the past few years.

As sports architects, we work closely with our clients to design venues that meet the needs of both athletes and the community.

We collaborate with many business partners and consultants, far and wide - each and every one of them is a leader in their field.

We are extremely grateful that we get to include such talented people in our teams.

106 | How do Sports Architects differ?

An architect is a licensed professional who is driven by their technical skill, practical understanding, analytical ability + creative flair. They work with you to help transform environments for the better.

Experienced & concerned with the art and science of designing spaces & places for people + the environment, a Sports Architect is a specialist able to explore & interpret, guide, support, & provide technical expertise to projects... where people are active, & the community resides.

For our principal architect - - his professional hockey career & involvement at the community grass-roots level have enabled him to travel the world and view sporting facilities from many viewpoints. This he brings to his architecture to connect sport with their community.

SPORT | Concept Development.

Our main focus at 106 is on sports-centric community, recreation and educational facilities.

The first part of our work is to prepare a concise pre-design brief that captures the functional requirements of the many multi-sport users who might occupy and use the facility.

The next step is to prepare a series of sketch schematic plans to test possible functional and spatial arrangements.

As the design process evolves, we start to explore the form - but only as a result of function.

Amazing where in the world you bump into friendly faces and professional colleagues...

A couple of weeks ago, our Director was in Italy on his delayed honeymoon, when straight off the boat in Bellagio he bumped into Robyn Wilcox - Sports And Play Industry Association (SAPIA) Secretary!

Back, refreshed, and into the winter’s work - it certainly wasn’t a bad WFH / Work from Anywhere location, we think!

To all our wonderful clients, partners and consultants, manufacturers and suppliers,

Here’s to wishing you and all your extended families, a happy and safe break.

It’s been another crazy year - everyone we’ve spoken to over these past few weeks are looking forward to this time to rest and recharge, just like us.

2024 is looking promising - we can’t wait to connect again in the New Year.

A reminder that our Australian + New Zealand studios are closed from COB Wednesday 20th December, until Tuesday 9th January 2024.

Travel safe and be kind.

Best wishes,
Dion and and 106 Team.

SPORT | Project Spotlight - Gisborne District Council Indoor Multipurpose Centre Feasibility study.

We have had the pleasure to partner with AU business Tredwell Management Services to provide recommendations to guide the Gisborne District Council in ensuring that the community has suitable and accessible indoor multipurpose provision in Gisborne-Tairawhiti.

This centre would cater for sports such as basketball, volleyball, netball, futsal, and a range of other recreation and community groups. It would allow tournaments and events to be held and could be used for other purposes, such as an evacuation centre.

With their Auckland office ready for business, this is Tredwell’s first official consulting project in New Zealand.

Welcome to the land of pavlova and jandles, Tredwell. We look forward to doing more work with you across NZ and AU - a team with extensive experience in sport, recreation, aquatic and trail planning.
