On Sunday 1 February the Broken Hill Field and Game Association started off the 2026 shooting year with a 50 target sporting clays graded championship. The shoot was generously sponsored by the Tweedie family who are very strong supporters of the Association. The day was pleasantly cool after a long hot spell, and despite the windy conditions, was very good for shooting clay targets. Organisers were pleased with the attendance of 29 shooters.

The range was set by Bob, Josh and Gerard who did an excellent job to present a good variety of targets. The targets were a few points easier than average which made for high scores and close finishes, but also made for very enjoyable shooting.

The best score off the gun was an excellent total of 47 that was shared by no fewer than 3 shooters; Travis Casey, Clay Johnston and Craig Lawrence. A shoot off was required to decide the winner which was won by Travis Casey reasonably comfortably at the finish.

The Association’s next clay target shooting event will be a 50 target championship on Sunday 1 March. Shooting will be at the Association’s range, Wentworth Road. The shoot will be followed at about 1 pm by the Annual General Meeting and all members are encouraged to attend. Keep an eye open for our page for more details. Organisers look forward to a good attendance of members and visitors are always most welcome.

On Sunday 7 December the Broken Hill Field and Game Association concluded another year of clay target shooting with our ever popular Christmas Shoot 🎅🏻. The shoot was very generously sponsored by the Broken Hill Bank, which provided for an excellent range of prizes.

The weather was warm, sunny and clear, perfect for shooting clay targets. Organisers were pleased with the attendance of about 30 shooters, including very welcome visitors from the Milparinka Club, and from the Broken Hill Clay Target Club.

The range was set by Josh and the usual band of culprits who worked very hard to provide excellent variety and a bit of a challenge in the 60 target competition. The best shooters in each grade shot some good totals.

The High Gun prize was won by Brian Casey with a score of 52, just a couple clear of Clay Johnston who shot 50 for first place in AA Grade. Other shooters who shot particularly well were Travis Casey and Gary Meehan who both shot 49 in A Grade.

At the conclusion of shooting Club President Rod Weaver presented the Association’s perpetual awards for the 2025 shooting year.

The winner of the Rex and Sidney Carroll Club Championship Cup for 2025 is Clay Johnston. Clay has won the club championship on four previous occasions and won this year by a very narrow margin from Travis Casey with Brian Casey finishing in third place. Grade trophies were presented to Travis Casey for A Grade, Murray Barker for B Grade, Grant Cox for C Grade, Lincoln Casey for Juniors, and Julie Gillespie for Ladies.

Rod, and Vice President Josh Edgecumbe, then presented two very special awards. The President’s Shield for an outstanding contribution to the Association, and Life Membership of the Association, were presented to Vicki Weaver. Vicki has been a staunch supporter of the club for the more than the twenty years that Rod has been President. Not only has she assisted Rod in his various responsibilities, but her cooking, catering and kitchen management skills on display at our major shoots have become legendary. No hungry shooter could ask for anything more. Two very well deserved awards for a job well done.

On Sunday 2 November the Broken Hill Field and Game Association conducted a 75 target Sporting Clays Graded Championship. The shoot was generously sponsored by the Silver City Workingmen’s Club. The day was overcast and hot with a strong wind, challenging conditions for shooting clay targets. Organisers were pleased with the attendance of 17 shooters.

The range was set by Clay and Josh and Brian and they did an excellent job to present a very good variety of targets. The targets were adjusted during the shoot for the windy conditions and made for very enjoyable shooting. The best shooters handled the conditions well and recorded some good totals.

The best score off the gun was an excellent total of 65 that was shot by A Grade shooter Brian Casey. Brian finished just a single shot clear of his nearest rival to win the High Gun Medal and the Ian West Memorial Trophy. Clay Johnston, Adrian Locke and Grant Cox all won their grades by comfortable margins at the finish.

On 11 and 12 October the Broken Hill Field and Game Association hosted its premier simulated field clay target shoot for the year, the 40th annual 150 target Silver City Championships. The weather was warm and breezy on Saturday, and cool and wet on Sunday, but not too bad for shooting clay targets. Organisers were delighted with the attendance of 76 shooters.

The shooters competed for an excellent range of sashes and trophies thanks to the generosity of our sponsors; Ricky Jones of Buckalow Station, Bolton's Precision Engineering, Flat Out Tyres, Outdoor Trading Company Aus., the Claypan Penguins, and Hayden Beven.

Range marshal Josh Edgecumbe, with plenty of assistance, worked very hard to set a range layout that provided plenty of interest and variety. The targets were a bit more challenging than average which made for very good shooting.

The best overall score for the shoot was an excellent total of 127 recorded by AA Grade shooter Aidan Salmeron representing the Riverland Club. This was Aidan’s first visit to the Silver City Championships and he won the Silver City Shield High Gun trophy and sash with just a single shot up his sleeve at the finish.

The best Broken Hill shooters were Clay Johnston who shot 126 for the AA Grade win, while Lincoln Casey shot 117 for first place in the Junior Grade.

The Claypan Penguins handicap team championship was won by the “The Mexicans” team comprising Brett McManus, Barry Wentworth, Paul Wentworth and Gary O’Brien, who shot a score of 628 to finish comfortably clear of their nearest rival.
