Leadership isn't about being the toughest boss on the worksite.

Over the years I've worked for some fantastic bosses, and I've worked for some that taught me exactly the kind of leader I never wanted to become.

There were jobs I genuinely loved. I enjoyed the work, I enjoyed the team, and I looked forward to going to work each day. But sometimes it only took one thing to change that... the way people were treated.

As I've grown older, run my own business and mentored apprentices, I've realised something.

Every employee has a life outside of work.

Some are raising kids.
Some are caring for ageing parents.
Some are dealing with health issues.
Some are fighting battles they'll never tell anyone about.

That doesn't mean there shouldn't be standards. There absolutely should be.

I expect honesty, respect, reliability and pride in your work.

But I also believe there's a difference between holding someone accountable and forgetting they're human.

I've seen first-hand what happens when people are treated like they're just another number on the payroll. Their motivation disappears. Their confidence fades. Eventually they leave—not because they hated the job, but because they no longer felt valued.

As an employer, I won't always get every decision right.

But I hope the people who work alongside me know this:

If you're doing your best and life throws you a curveball, I'll do my best to support you.

If someone chooses to take advantage of that kindness, that's their decision.

Because at the end of the day, I still believe people get back what they put into life.
