There's lots of renovation advice out there - the genuinely helpful advice is mixed in with the irrelevant or downright wrong. These are the pieces of advice that we routinely hear ...... and immediately disregard.
1. "You have to have a bath." Nope, you really don't. Installing a bath when you don't want one, is throwing away money. Better to invest the space and money into something you'll use more.
2. "If you're selling, keep the bathroom plain." Renovating your bathroom so that it goes a step beyond the oridinary is a minimal expense with the potential for big rewards. Homes that are more than just functional, are the homes that excite buyers and your bathroom shouldn't be the space that lets down the property.
3. "You don't really need a project manager." Utter garbage. All projects needs a project manager - whether its you or a professional - to chase deliveries, confirm schedules and quality check. The difference is that a professional has the experience to catch errors as they are happening.
4. "You can't move plumbing from it's original location." You can. Of course you can and we do it every week. There are very few situations where you can't. It's just a matter of cost and expertise.
5. "Floor mount vanities have more space." More space does not equal better. It's dependent on your bathroom and your needs. There's so many storage options out there that it's best to start with an audit of what you personally need.
6. "Small bathrooms need small tiles." It's true that it's easier to get fall in a shower with smaller tiles. However, there is absolutey no reason why you can't have large tiles on the walls and contrary to wisdom, larger tiles on the wall will help to make the space feel larger.
7. "If you have a window you don't need exhaust." You don't HAVE to. You also won't open the window in winter. Hello mould.
8. "You only need a week or two for a bathroom renovation." This one makes us want to laugh because it's just so stupid, and then cry because we're worried for the disaster bathrooms that come from this line of thinking. Which we'll have to fix.
