For months this was just the space under a house. This week it turned into rooms.
The plasterboard went on at our Springfield Lakes build-under — ceilings first, then the walls — and the whole thing changed character overnight. Instead of a big open area with frames standing in it, there are doorways you walk through and rooms that are already exactly the size they will be forever.
The part that took the time is the part you'd never guess. A good chunk of the week went on packing the walls: shimming the timber frames out a few millimetres at a time until they all sit in one flat plane. It's slow, fiddly work, and it's the whole reason a finished wall reads as one clean surface instead of showing up every little hollow the moment the afternoon light comes across it.
Insulation went in on the way through too, so the rooms already sound different to stand in — that hush a lined room has that an open space under a house never does.
Setting and sanding next, and then it starts looking like somewhere you'd live.
If your high-set has room underneath you've always wondered about, we'd love to come and have a look with you.
