Australia’s construction pipeline is facing another pressure point, with CEDA warning that slow, complex, and fragmented environmental approvals could delay major housing, infrastructure, and clean energy projects. The report, developed with TechnologyOne, says applications can run to thousands of pages and require compliance across dozens of laws, adding pressure to already stretched government assessment teams.
CEDA argues that AI should not replace human judgement, but can help regulators search previous decisions, reduce duplication, handle large documents, and focus expert review where it matters most. The report points to international examples, including Denmark, where AI-assisted tools are estimated to save around AU$80 million annually in regulator time costs.
For Australia’s building sector, the issue is bigger than technology. Faster, clearer approvals can affect how quickly projects move from planning to procurement, supply, and delivery. For builders, contractors, and suppliers, including teams like Bayside Plasterboard, the message is clear: smarter systems upstream can help support a more predictable construction pipeline on the ground.
