A busy retail car park needs drivers to slow down, particularly where vehicles and pedestrians share the space.

At Sunny Corner Retail Centre, Speed Humps Australia carried out a speed hump installation to help manage vehicle speeds through the car park.

Retail environments present their own challenges. Installations need to consider vehicle movements, pedestrian activity and keeping disruption to businesses to a minimum.

It's the kind of practical traffic-calming work we undertake for commercial properties across Australia.

Not every speed hump is installed to slow vehicles down.

At Broadwater Shores in Runaway Bay, the problem wasn't speeding. It was stormwater.

During heavy rain, water running off the street was finding its way down the driveway towards the apartment car park.

The solution involved using a speed hump as a water bund to help redirect runoff while still allowing residents to drive across it.

The challenge was finding a suitable height and profile for the driveway.

It's an interesting example of how a familiar product can solve a very different problem.

What happens when painted lines aren't enough, but a concrete median seems excessive?

It's a question council road teams sometimes face when drivers repeatedly cross a centreline or cut through a bend.

A surface-mounted lane guide using yellow rumble bars may be worth considering.

The bars provide a visible reference and tactile feedback when vehicles pass over them, without requiring the same construction work as a concrete median.

They're not suitable for every location, but they give engineers another option to assess.

Wide roads and blind corners can make traffic safety a real concern in residential communities.

At D Grove Villas in Dakabin, we installed flat-top speed humps, convex safety mirrors and shared zone signage to encourage slower, safer driving.

A practical traffic-calming solution to help protect residents, pedestrians and visitors.

Drivers keep cutting across the centreline. Is installing a lane guide the right answer?

Before choosing a product, councils need to understand what's actually happening at the location.

Are vehicles cutting corners? Are larger vehicles crossing the centreline because of the road geometry? Could a physical treatment create another problem?

We've outlined five practical questions to help council teams assess a location before deciding on a lane guide treatment.

A little investigation before installation can make a big difference.

There's a big difference between a product being tested and a traffic outcome being proven.

When councils consider rumble bars for traffic guidance, it's important to understand what the available evidence actually tells them.

Was the product tested for durability? Was driver behaviour observed? Or was a measurable change in traffic behaviour recorded?

Those are three different things, and the distinction matters when choosing a treatment.

Our latest article explains why councils should ask these questions before making a decision.

Shared driveways should be safe for everyone.

With vehicles, residents and pedestrians sharing the same space, keeping speeds down is essential.

Our 50mm flat-top speed humps encourage drivers to slow down and maintain a controlled speed through residential complexes, townhouse developments and shared driveways.

A simple traffic calming solution that makes a real difference.

Before making a lane guide permanent, how do you know it will work?

A trial can help council engineers observe how drivers respond to a proposed layout before committing to a permanent installation.

But a useful trial needs more than an installation date. It needs a clear objective, a baseline and an agreed review process.

We've put together a practical guide to help councils plan and assess lane guide trials.

Wide internal roads. Blind corners. Children playing around the complex. And no speed humps anywhere on site.

That was the starting point at D Grove Villas in Dakabin.

Five priority locations were identified for traffic calming, with plastic flat-top speed humps installed to provide a stronger slowing effect on the complex’s wider roads.

But speed wasn’t the only issue.

Drainage through the centre of the roads meant gaps had to be incorporated without creating an easy path for drivers to avoid the humps. Blind corners also required convex mirrors because slowing a vehicle doesn’t solve a visibility problem.

The result was a site-specific combination of speed control, drainage management and improved visibility.

The best time to solve a new shopping centre’s traffic problems can be before the first customer arrives.

At Sunny Corner Retail Centre in Sunnybank, we walked the completed car park before opening and looked at how vehicles, pedestrians and deliveries would actually move through the site.

That meant considering more than just the obvious entrance.

The loading dock could become a shortcut. The pedestrian crossing needed traffic slowed from the right locations. And because the site slopes towards drainage points, the speed hump layout had to allow water to continue flowing.

Traffic calming works better when it responds to the site rather than simply adding speed humps wherever there happens to be space.
