The thought of the weekend has been this…

No matter the space you occupy, nor the time spent occupying it…

It it’s always a good idea to get stuck in and improve the situation… to leave it better than how you found it.

If you’re sitting there waiting for the next or more permanent thing… you’re in it.

It’s called now 🤝

I’ve been pretty tired lately...

Having a young child is funny like that. You can be getting enough done, functioning normally, having a good day, but there’s still this underlying tiredness that seems to follow you around!

And I’ve noticed how much it changes the little things. You’re more easily irritated, you have less patience, your head feels a bit slower and things that normally wouldn’t bother you can suddenly seem like a much bigger deal than they really are. Nothing is necessarily wrong, you’re just not quite operating under the same conditions.

It got me thinking about plants and all the little environmental stresses we probably overlook because they aren’t dramatic enough to notice…

Take an outdoor light, for example. A security light or street light shining onto a plant all night might not be enough to kill it or even make it look obviously unhealthy. But the plant is responding to light as information as well as energy. Darkness is part of its environment too, and that change between light and dark helps regulate all sorts of processes.

So if you’ve got a plant sitting under artificial light every night, it may still grow perfectly well. But it’s not necessarily experiencing the same environment as a plant that gets a proper night.

I find that interesting because it’s a bit like being tired…

You can keep going. You can still function. You can still grow, in a sense… but the conditions matter, even when the effect is small.

I think we look for stress in the garden as something obvious… like yellow leaves, pests, disease, stunted growth. However there can be much quieter forms of stress happening long before we see anything like that.

And maybe that’s one of the useful things about being a bit tired yourself... You become more aware of how much small changes in the environment can affect the way a living thing behaves!

Big week in the Redlands coming up! 🌟

Starting Sunday I’m on the islands checking out the Karragarra Community Gardens to speak at their Open Day on everything long term living soil building incredible soil for our gardens…

Then Thursday I’m speaking at ROGI on everything pest management, and how we can expect to prevent these insects from taking out our crops using soil health principles and understanding the insects themselves!

An action packed week and so excited to bring it all back to where this journey began.

See you on the red soil 🤝

Something I’ve been noticing around the garden this spring is how different plants look when they first start putting on new growth. Some throw out these big, obvious shoots almost overnight, while others have tiny little growth tips that you’d barely notice unless you were looking closely.

It’s easy to look at the first plant and think it’s doing really well, while the second one doesn’t seem to be doing much at all. But what are we actually measuring when we make that judgement? The amount of new growth we can see? The speed at which it appears? Or how well the plant is responding to the conditions it’s growing in?

In a garden, rapid growth isn’t always the whole story. A plant might be putting a lot of energy into extending its roots, establishing relationships with soil organisms, or simply maintaining itself until conditions are right for more growth above ground.

Lush and green leaves full of nitrogen often give us the impression of health but you’ll quickly discover that’s not always the case…

We tend to judge things by what’s visible because that’s what we have in front of us. But the garden is a pretty good reminder that what we can see is only part of what’s happening…
