⚠️ Queensland Owner-Occupiers: Important Smoke Alarm Reminder!
From 1 January 2027, all owner-occupied homes in Queensland must have compliant, interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms installed.
Key requirements:
✅ Photoelectric smoke alarms
✅ Compliant with AS 3786–2014
✅ Installed in every bedroom
✅ Installed in hallways connecting bedrooms and on every storey
✅ All alarms must be interconnected—when one activates, they all sound
✅ Alarms must be less than 10 years old
What should homeowners do now?
1️⃣ Check whether smoke alarms are installed in every bedroom, hallway and on every level
2️⃣ Confirm that the alarms are photoelectric and interconnected
3️⃣ Check the manufacture date and power supply of each alarm
4️⃣ Arrange an inspection or upgrade early—don’t wait until the end of 2026
Please note: Properties being sold, rented or re-leased are already required to comply with Queensland’s interconnected photoelectric smoke alarm requirements.
Pressing the test button and hearing an alarm does not necessarily mean the entire property is compliant. The number, location, type, age, power supply and interconnection of all alarms must also be checked.
