The Esri Young Scholar Award 2026 featured some excellent projects. 🌏

Our winner, Lucy Hughes, used GIS to help record, monitor, and manage stone-walled fishtraps across the Wellesley Islands region. She’ll join Esri Australia this July for a paid internship. πŸŽ“

The runners-up did some incredible work too. Warsini Handayani used GIS to project estimated future hydrogen demand and plan refuelling stations for heavy-duty freight. Zhou Zhou’s project mapped potential Dark Sky Reserve sites across Queensland to show where night-sky protection could connect with conservation, access, and tourism. ✨

National priorities don't just happen on paper.

They are delivered across communities, infrastructure networks, services and places.

The 2026-27 Federal Budget highlights growing investment across housing, infrastructure, healthcare and regional development but also shows how complex delivery has become.

That is why location matters.

A spatial view helps organisations understand how investment, infrastructure, population growth and service access connect on the ground.

Read more on why delivery complexity is becoming a national challenge. https://hubs.la/Q04hrY9w0

Use maps and storytelling to explore climate and migration. 🌍

The StoryMaps Challenge 2026 invites students under eighteen to create an ArcGIS StoryMap that shows how climate and/or migration affect people, places, and environments.

Launched in partnership with Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and Geography Teachers’ Association of Victoria, this challenge gives students the chance to investigate real-world issues and share what they discover in a creative way.

πŸ† The winning entry will be recognised at the RMIT Geospatial Awards Dinner on 21 August 2026.

πŸ“… Entries close 31 July 2026.
