The filter not only keeps the air cleaner but also prevents all that dust building up inside the unit & ductwork.
* If the filter is dirty, less air passes through the system
* Less air flow means the system will be less efficient

Do you want your ducted gas heating system to run more efficiently? Here's a tip for you.... rather than turning your heater off overnight, drop the minimum temperature to 14 degrees. It takes more energy (and therefore more $$$) to heat the house from cold than it does to maintain a constant temp.
If you have a reverse cycle system, drop it to 16 degrees :-)

If your ducted gas heater is not performing as efficiently as you expect there could be a few reasons but the most common is that it needs a service.
A service on a ducted heating system includes; removing and cleaning the fan, cleaning the supply and return chambers (not just the filters), cleaning the flame and ignition sensors, checking gas flow and adjusting if necessary and checking the return air-filter and testing the unit. Having a regular service also means your ductwork gets checked to make sure there is no damage (yes dogs, rats and possums, we're looking at you)...picture all that beautiful hot air leaking out your ductwork and into the roof/underfloor instead of keeping you nice and toasty...inconvenient and pretty expensive.
