Last week Tim and our new apprentice Dusty spent a couple of days repairing a section at Utungun for the Soil Conservation Service. It was only a short stretch and just a few days on the machines.

We were surprised to see it pop up in the news afterwards. It gives you a bit of a thrill when you see your work on the TV and online — especially for Tim, who’s on the Dozer most days of the year, and for young Dusty who got some time on the roller.

As locals who’ve worked on plenty of fire trails and fire breaks in our region over the years, we know how important these access tracks are for the community and for safety.

It was good to play a small part. Credit to the RFS, Soil Conservation Service, the local member Michael Kemp MP, and everyone who keeps pushing pro-actively for important work like this.

We’re pretty lucky to call the Nambucca Valley home.

Every block has its own view — but often it’s the invasive growth that takes over and hides what’s really there.

That’s where the dozer comes in.

Clearing back the hard-to-manage growth, opening up the land, and preparing it properly — whether it’s for a house site, shed pad, driveway, horse arena or water tank.

🚜 Becker Earthmoving is searching for 1-2 Sole Traders to operate Machinery on call (Excavator + Roller or Loader) 🚜

We are seeking at least 1 reliable and experienced sole trader subcontractor to join us on a flexible, project-based basis. Work is concentrated across the Nambucca Valley region and loosely the Mid North Coast of NSW, with a focus on natural disaster recovery, civil repair, and access works in rural, remote, and residential locations.

🛠️ The responsible operator will:

- Operate a 14t excavator, as well as roller or loader
- Assist with shifting plant
- Use your own vehicle to access sites
- May work solo or within a small team (including alongside apprentices or other subcontractors)
- Report to the Site Supervisor and Operations Manager
- Maintain professionalism and refer client enquiries to the Operations Manager
- Support client satisfaction and keep jobs running productively

📍 Location:

Mid North Coast of NSW — including more remote or regional sites particularly in the Nambucca Valley and surrounds

Includes private residential jobs, environmental repair, and council work

⏱️ Expectations:

- Be punctual with given work hours: schedule will change and communication is paramount (based on each site's plan)
- Be accountable with timekeeping and send us weekly invoices of your time on site
- Maintain a high standard of safety and communication
- Complete a quick series of unpaid onboarding SafetyCulture modules (via mobile) before attending site
- Engage professionally with clients and the wider team
- Our reputation is built on trust and we hope your reputation is important to you, too.

✅ Essentials:

- Relevant construction site tickets
- Registered sole trader with ABN
- Excavator experience essential
- Experience on roller or loader preferred
- MR Truck Licence minimum and ability to get HR)
- Own vehicle and mobile phone
- Comfortable working independently or in a small team
- Occasional ability to work away and stay in provided accommodation to minimise lengthy travel to job sites (depending on client)

💼 Insurance Made Easy:
We’ve included subcontractors under our icare policy – so while independent income protection insurance is favoured, you don’t need to organise your own insurance separately.

🕓 Flexibility:
This position is flexible and we want it to fit around your existing work or commitments. It may be temporary or ongoing depending on local demand and project scheduling. We're open to discussion with the right candidate.

- Has the tickets and real-world experience to work with us on a site safely and efficiently

📣 Operational Update – Becker Earthmoving

We’re currently managing a high volume of work across the Mid North Coast, following prolonged wet weather and more widespread damage recently. Because conditions vary from one property to the next, we’ve adapted our approach to ensure the best use of time, equipment, and ground access.

Previously, we’ve scheduled our work based on location — completing jobs suburb by suburb, and ideally in the order they were confirmed. However, in the current environment, that model no longer delivers the best outcome for clients, equipment, or access.

We’ve now implemented a strategic prioritisation model, which means we’re balancing:

✔️ Urgency and safety — where road access, animal movement, or infrastructure are compromised
✔️ Ground conditions — working where machinery can operate effectively and won’t cause damage
✔️ Job suitability — deploying resources where they can be productive in the current weather window

This does mean that some jobs that haven’t yet been addressed may be delayed further — even if they were confirmed earlier. We understand that can be frustrating, and want to reassure clients that every job remains in our system and is reassessed regularly based on weather and access.

By triaging our work, we’re able to:
✔️ Finalise jobs already underway
✔️ Book future work based on timing, ground readiness, and client impact
✔️ Continue regional works where conditions allow for stable progress and keep machines under hire

Our goal is to remain fully operational and responsive — making every dry day count while protecting our clients, crew, and equipment.

🚧 Project Spotlight – Toowoomba Region 🚧

We spent some time up in the Toowoomba area last November, working on a steep 750m bush driveway in Withcott — and the results speak for themselves.

Tim handled the earthmoving and installation using flexible concrete erosion mats, creating a safe, all-weather access road for both 2WD and heavy vehicles. It’s now a permanent, low-maintenance solution that’s holding up brilliantly through heavy rainfall and the recent cyclone.

When asked ‘How did the costs and benefits come in when compared to other options?’

“…I did a lot of research before I chose Australian Concrete Mats. I wanted something that would be a permanent, near zero maintenance solution. Concrete mats were a third the cost of an all-concrete driveway and poured concrete introduced its own distinct limitations and expensive maintenance requirements. Bitumen wasn’t a contender due to high maintenance, slope and soil conditions here. Flexible concrete mats were perfect.
