ACFA 2026 Finalist — Best In-Built Furniture. Australian Cabinet & Furniture Association (ACFA)

This one looks like a cabinet. It’s actually a refrigerated cellar.
The whole unit is insulated and sealed, rubber seals throughout, double glazed glass doors, locks, and timber racking inside. Building a functioning fridge that still reads as a piece of furniture meant every join, seal line and door reveal had to work twice: once for the thermal performance, once for the look. No visible compromise on either.
Same scope: the dark stained oak wall panelling through the room and the coffered ceiling above, all grain matched to the cabinet.
A hard job, and one the team should be proud of.

ACFA 2026 Finalist — Best In-Built Furniture. Australian Cabinet & Furniture Association (ACFA)
Full-height cabinetry in American oak. Panelled walls, skirting, architraves, pocket doors, integrated shelving and concealed base drawers, all running as one continuous grain match around the room and through the door surround.
The satisfying part of a job like this is what you don’t see: every panel, reveal and shadowline set out so the room reads as a single piece of cabinetry rather than a wall with shelves on it.

Veronica, second-year apprentice. This one’s hers.
Veneer laid by hand. Timber machined, joints worked out, the whole assembly sequenced and dominoed together. Stained and sealed, start to finish, on her own.
Curved Perspex, solid timber frame, contrast base. Not a simple piece to build in your twentieth year of the trade, let alone your second. This is what a real apprenticeship looks like, not sweeping floors for four years, but being trusted with a piece like this and rising to it.

Full-height hanging bays with integrated LED to every shelf and rail. Oak veneer drawer boxes on Blum Australia soft-close movento runners, aged brass k***s and hanging rails, and a desk niche built to the window reveal. Book matched grain across the drawer fronts, backs and end panels, every panel sequenced so the figure runs continuously through the room.

A display cabinet finished in our workshop last week. The Perspex is bent to the corner radius rather than mitred, which means the frame has to be made to the glass, not the other way around — every rail and stile machined to suit, with a contrast band carried through the top and plinth mouldings so the line reads as one continuous detail from any angle.
