Why is the Victorian Road Toll Rising?

Could it be that no one drove for 2 years?

Attrocious Roads?

My guess would be mental Apathy - paired with the first two.

Road safety programs have been very successful over decades.

No disputing that & every road death is a tragedy. I’ve seen it first hand in my life.

But I think we’ve psychologically we’ve stopped valuing competence - and replaced it with Safe apathetic incompetence.

And I’ll explain

what if these new Autonomous Systems being put in cars are making us apathetic drivers?

Compare the experience of driving a manual hatchback from the early 1990s to the current Automatic model.

the new cars are totally superior

everytime a new car is released it gets bigger and heavier than its predessors

Today’s Mazda 3 is a bigger car than a VL Commodore

They have more power, better brakes and better vehicle dynamics

and its made them safer, but also much much easier to drive

Add to that systems that help you brake, stop traction loss and lane guidance you can drive them at 10:10s safer than ever before and I’m sure people do

But it doesnt stop you flying through a stop sign and hitting another car does it?

It doesnt stop you swerving to miss an animal and sending the car into a ditch either

Hoon culture on public roads is bad

But hoon culture was an extension of racing.

Racing = driving excellence. Skills.

We frown on skills now. in fact we attack them.

Road manners and ettiquite has changed too.

Back in the day when you did something dumb on the roads, you’d expect aggro from fellow drivers.

Now if you’re aggro, even if someone nearly incompetently killed you - its seen as a criminal offense.

And try and it find out how entitled people are.

Try getting aggro at a cyclist that cuts you off and nearly gets killed…

You’ll probably end up in court.

I think we’ve gone too far.

We now celebrate safety more than competence. And we protect and laud the incompetent as a culture.

When was the last time you saw a race driver being put on a Pedestal with Road Safety Messages?

Never. We’ve criminalised any culture that associates with performance.

Its all politics of course. Safety sells.

Everyone wants to be safe, and few voters are competent.

Think about it.
