The brief was zen-like, architectural and low-maintenance, with a focal point visible from the home office.

A buried concrete slab, sandstone from an old foundation reused as feature rocks, and a Tree Aloe (Aloidendron barberae) as the centrepiece — with Mexican Giant Cactus (Pachycereus pringlei), Silver Torch Cactus (Cleistocactus strausii) and Golden Barrel Cactus (Echinocactus grusonii) around it, and Kalanchoe Silver Spoons for orange flowers in season.

BTS from our Surry Hills courtyard — tree aloe, golden barrels, cowboy cactus, all coming out of winter and into their growing season. No lawn, no seasonal replanting, and a spring visit is about all it asks for.

Sandstone, gravel and a low-key succulent planting, arranged so the courtyard reads as one composition rather than a collection of specimens.

The golden barrel is the exception — a single point of warmth against the darker forms around it. Echinocactus grusonii, with blue chalksticks (Senecio serpens) softening the ground plane.

Every pot goes exactly where it's going to live before a single one goes in the ground. Spacing, rhythm along the steppers, how it reads from the house. It takes an hour and it's the difference between a garden that looks planted and one that looks designed.

Good gardens are built. The best ones are grown — this one took five years.

There's no single "after" photo that explains this Bondi courtyard, because it was never one project. It's been an ongoing stewardship project since 2020: the canopy managed, the soil fed, the palette added to season by season. The bones — that circular corten bed, the curved lawn, the black boundary walls — only work because everything growing around them has been looked after the whole way.

This is what an ongoing maintenance relationship actually produces. Not tidiness. This.

Five years of care, finished in time for a wedding under the trees 🌿

This sheltered Bondi courtyard has been in our hands since 2020 — regular horticultural maintenance, gradual softscaping, and a long conversation with a garden that matters deeply to its owners. This year the brief changed: with a wedding planned right here on the lawn, a well-kept courtyard needed to become an extraordinary one.

Under the mature Podocarpus canopy we built a layered tropical understorey — Monstera deliciosa, Spathiphyllum 'Sensation', Calathea and Anthurium over a ground plane of Mondo Grass and Dichondra — framed by corten steel, polished black pebble and those deep charcoal walls.
