Father's Day dinner is brought to you by my vegie patch.

Steamed broccoli side shoots and asparagus plus cauliflower cheese and garlic mashed sweet potato.

It's very satisfying seeing a plate full of homegrown produce.

We are rapidly approaching a very difficult time for many gardeners. Decision time. Do you pull out your brassica crops whilst they are still producing to get your summer crops in? Or wait a little longer and keep feasting on tasty brassica goodness.

For me that decision is still a good month away at least.

I have got tomato, zucchini, cucumber and basil seeds in punnets in the greenhouse in readiness.

But for now my harvest baskets look like this.

Last night I attended the Royal Adelaide Show VIP Garden Preview.

It was a wonderful opportunity to see all the horticultural displays without battling the crowds.

Sophie Thomson's show garden this year is simply called 'Grow'. It features a balcony, courtyard and backyard to showcase growing plants including food in a range of spaces.

The backyard space contains 3 of our large timber wicking beds including 1 with a trellis for peas.

But here's the kicker. At the end of the show, these 3 beds, plus 1 extra, will be donated to a worthy community group. To be in the draw, you have to visit the display and enter via the QR code that will be on a poster in the garden.

After the show, Sophie and I will help set up the beds for the lucky recipients.

So if you are going to the show this year, make sure you check out the horticultural displays.

Spring! The most popular season for gardeners.

So many options to plant, more so for those of you in frost-free climates

The greenhouse is full of seed trays in preparation for the warmer weather. Traditionally I aim to plant warm season crops in late October, early November. Many of you can start planting now.

Huge weekend in the garden enjoying the spectacular weather. I hope you got your hands in the soil too.

I've converted part of my herb garden into the strawberry patch.

It made sense to use the Foodcubes instead of my half wine barrels as these are far easier to net. And it's not the birds who love stealing my strawberries.....

Oh no, my problem is a lot bigger. Tilly, the innocent looking Golden Retriever loves to gobble up unripe strawberries that are still satisfyingly crunchy. Conveniently located next to the fence that I grow snowpeas up which are also, Tilly approved crunchy.

The half wine barrels will get filled with herbs which Tilly has no interest in at all.

Another delivery of Foodcubes arrived today just in time for Spring. They are flying out the door almost as fast as we can get them.

The first broccoli crops are now done.

Rather than pull them out I like to let them flower to provide pollen for the bees. They also attract beneficial insects like hoverflies and parasitic wasps that predate aphids whose numbers explode as the weather warms up.

I don't collect seeds from brassicas as they readily cross pollinate and I grow several species in the same area.
