Another day, another story about Australian governments selling out Australia. 👇

Taxpayers do not need to give $240 million to a foreign company that made $6 billion last year.

If the government has to get involved, then it should take equity in the company, or even better invest in some coal or nuclear power stations that can provide cheap energy on a permanent basis.

Subsidies are merely kicking the can down the road at taxpayer expense.

"A group of international shareholders are warning state and federal governments against giving global commodities giant Trafigura hundreds of millions of dollars to keep smelting operations going in Australia.

Trafigura owns Nyrstar, which runs smelters in Port Pirie and Hobart, collectively employing about 1,400 people.

So far, the federal government and Tasmanian and South Australian state governments have given Trafigura $240 million in taxpayer funds, including $105 million early last month to maintain operations.

In its latest half yearly results, posted in June, Trafigura reported a nearly $6 billion profit, but the company has threatened to shut Nyrstar's loss-making Australian businesses."
