Building a new home in Queensland means compliance is required from the get go, and from January 1 next year, all homes, units, townhouses and apartments need interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms that meet Australian Standard AS 3786-2014.

Alarms are required in every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms, and on every level of the home. Ionisation alarms no longer comply, and neither do combination units that include an ionisation sensor. Alarms should be tested regularly and replaced once they are 10 years old.

Remember: hardwired alarms must be installed by a licensed electrician.

Congratulations to our apprentice Riley Wilson!

Riley recently competed in the 2026 WorldSkills Australia Regional Electrical Installations Competition — and took out first place!

For the practical component, Riley built and wired a simulated residential switchboard and several circuits, including lighting, power, and a start/stop contactor-controlled water pump. The task covered installing and terminating cabling, fitting protection devices, completing earthing, and testing and commissioning the circuits — all while ensuring the installation complied with AS/NZS 3000

It was a great opportunity for Riley to demonstrate practical wiring, fault-checking, accuracy, and time management skills under competition conditions — and it clearly paid off!
