Sewer infrastructure is just amazing !

💧FLASHBACK FRIDAY💧

78 years ago, construction on the Southern and Western Suburbs Ocean Outfall Sewer No. 2 was completed.

SWSOOS No. 1 served Sydney from 1909 until 1931, carrying wastewater from Sydney’s southern and western suburbs to Malabar Wastewater Treatment Plant. The second SWSOOS was built to accommodate the growing demands of Sydney’s population. It was a huge undertaking – at one point in 1938, over 1,400 men were employed on the construction project!

This cracking shot was taken on the 12th January 1938, when a party from the Metropolitan Water, Sewerage and Drainage Board (one of the old names for Sydney Water!), proceeded through the near-completed SWSOOS No. 2 by CAR to inspect the finished concrete work.

Today, the combined SWSOOS system is the largest in NSW, transporting millions of litres of sewerage per day. Goes alright considering its status as a senior citizen!
