The Ridgeline Hybrid:Home project is a "modern shearing shed" vision is realised through a palette of corrugated iron, weathering steel, and 200 x 200 rough-sawn hardwood posts, all chosen for their rustic aesthetic and BAL 29 bushfire resilience.

Long-term durability is baked into the build through a rigorous approach to waterproofing utilising recessed slabs, custom-folded flashings, and a ventilated cavity system that allows the structure to breathe and dry naturally.

Thermal comfort is managed externally via a 1200mm eave and an angled timber pergola, which harvests free winter sun while blocking summer heat before it can enter the home. From the reclaimed messmate timber kitchen joinery to the airtight, insulated roof access design, every detail demonstrates how thoughtful material selection and specialised construction methodology can turn a rural residence into a healthy, high-performance sanctuary.

Our Ridgeline Hybrid:Home achieved an airtightness result of 0.55 air changes per hour a result that exceeds many international high-performance standards. This was achieved using a "plasterboard-as-air-barrier" method, where the internal lining is meticulously sealed to the structure alongside specialised airtight electrical boxes and high-spec lift-and-slide doors that utilise rubber gaskets for a mechanical seal.

To ensure a healthy indoor environment, a Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV) system acts as the "lungs" of the home, providing fresh, filtered air while stabilising humidity between 40% and 60%. Externally, the home is protected by a vapour-permeable membrane and a ventilated cavity system that allows the structure to "breathe" and dry naturally, protecting the timber frame from moisture.

By combining these advanced airtight technologies with a focus on longevity, including flush-entry showers and reinforced walls for future accessibility, we’ve created a rural sanctuary that is exceptionally quiet, durable, and energy-efficient.

Building on the design phase, the Ridgeline Hybrid:Home project uses advanced framing techniques to achieve exceptional thermal performance and air tightness. By utilising 140mm studs at wider spacings and "California Corners," we’ve maximised insulation depth while eliminating common cold spots.

The home’s structure features striking Tasmanian Oak portal frames, which provide necessary bracing for the cathedral ceilings while serving as a central aesthetic feature. To ensure longevity, the entire building envelope is wrapped in a taped, vapour-permeable membrane and a ventilated cavity system that allows moisture to dry naturally.

This meticulous approach to the building fabric, combined with strategic northern glazing for solar gain and deep eaves for summer shading, creates a highly efficient home that remains comfortable year-round using standard construction materials.

We recently wrapped up a modern, off-grid take on the classic Australian farm shed at our Ridgeline Hybrid:Home. Designed to catch natural breezes and frame 360-degree views of Mount Alexander, the home runs entirely on solar power and rainwater while utilising fire-resistant materials for its bush setting.

To ensure year-round comfort, we fully insulated under the concrete slab, which stops the cold ground from pulling heat out and keeps the floors warm throughout winter. By having the builder, designer, and engineer collaborate from day one, we were also able to swap expensive steel frames for exposed timber, maintaining the rustic aesthetic while significantly reducing build costs.

The final design perfectly blends indoor and outdoor living, featuring a hidden outdoor kitchen, an exposed shower off the master suite, and flush sliding doors that seamlessly open the house up to the surrounding landscape.

Good design doesn’t impose itself on a landscape; it finds a way to belong.

The Stone Fold Hybrid:Home was a dialogue with the land. By hugging a 12-metre rock face, the design shields itself from southerly winds while inviting the northern sun deep inside. From its FSC-certified timber frame to a 90% construction waste recycling rate, every choice was a lesson in responsibility. This is an all-electric sentinel that gives back to the grid, proving architectural drama and environmental care are one and the same.

In a well-designed home, the air you breathe should be as considered as the materials you touch.

There is a specific kind of stillness inside the Stone Fold Hybrid:Home. While the L-shaped design frames views toward Mount Franklin and the siltstone rock face, the internal environment is optimised by a Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV) system. Because the home uses an open, door-free layout for longevity, this system can circulate filtered, tempered air effortlessly through every room. It maintains a constant humidity and filters out the dust and bushfire smoke that often visit this region. The result is a home that doesn't just provide shelter; it provides a healthy, predictable microclimate that adapts to the seasons so you don't have to.

High-performance design shouldn't be an unreachable it should be the foundation of the Australian home.

The Stone Fold Hybrid:Home achieved a 9.1-star NatHERS rating, but for us, the stars are secondary to the science. This project is a living test of our Hybrid:Home methodology—a way to bridge the gap between traditional building practices and the rigorous physics of Building Science. By focusing on the "unseen" details—continuous insulation, airtightness at 0.6 ACH, and thermal bridge-free construction—we’ve created a shell that maintains a stable 18–23°C year-round. It is an all-electric, net-positive dwelling that proves we can achieve elite performance without the "elite" price tag.

We often build for who we are today, forgetting that a house should be a partner that grows old with us.

In the Central Highlands of Victoria, tucked against a 12-metre siltstone rock face, the Stone Fold Hybrid:Home offers a masterclass in future-proofing. Beyond the dramatic cantilevered balcony lies an interior designed with a quiet empathy. By eliminating internal doors and ensuring every threshold is completely trip-free, we’ve moved away from the "standard" home toward a space of true accessibility. It’s an "aging-in-place" philosophy that doesn’t feel clinical it feels like flow. This is architecture that respects the site’s ruggedness while providing a gentle, barrier-free sanctuary for the decades to come.

5 years of OUTLIER.

In 2021, we set out with a specific purpose: to design homes that are calm, quiet, and consistently comfortable.

Half a decade later, our mission remains the same. Every line drawn and every material selected is an investment in your health, happiness, and long‑term energy efficiency.

To the clients who have invited us to design their sanctuaries and the consultants and builders who share our obsession with detail—thank you for five incredible years.

We are just getting started on the path to building better.
