What is co-dominancy in trees?

Co-dominancy occurs when a tree develops two or more main trunks growing from the same point, rather than one strong central leader.

While it might look normal, this type of growth can create a structural weakness where the stems meet. As the tree grows, the trunks push against each other and can trap bark between them, preventing a strong connection from forming.

Over time this can increase the risk of splitting or failure — particularly during strong winds, storms, or as the tree gets larger and heavier.

It’s something arborists keep an eye on because early assessment and management can help reduce the risk and keep the tree healthy and safe.

Not every job means removing a tree

This tree had developed a structural split between the main stems, which can weaken the tree and increase the risk of failure over time — especially during strong winds or storms.

To help stabilise it and extend the life of the tree, we installed a threaded support rod through the trunk. This reinforcement pulls the stems together and provides extra structural strength where the split had started.

It’s a great option when a tree is otherwise healthy but needs some added support to remain safe.

Proper assessment and the right solution can often save a tree instead of removing it.
