As per our last post, but more technical:

• GNSS needs two units to achieve surveying accuracy, one set on a known point and one being the rover. At any instant in time, the unit on the known point, called the base station, works out the difference between the actual coordinate for the point and the coordinate determined from the satellites overhead. The rover doesn’t automatically know the difference between the correct coordinate and what’s being measured. The difference in coordinates is measured at the base station and transmitted to the rover, where that correction is applied in real time to get accurate measurements. This is called Real Time Kinematic. The correction can be sent and received via radio from our own base station, which is useful, particularly in rural locations. An alternative is to use CORS – see below.

• CORS is Continually Operating Reference Station. There is a network of CORS stations across Australia (image showing the NSW “CORSnet” network). The correction data from each CORS station is available to be accessed using a web login via a paid subscription. When the rover is close to a reference station, we find it best to use that station as the only correction source. When the rover is between reference stations, it is possible to use multiple stations to get a Network Solution. Network coverage is shown on the CORS map as the red stripe hatching. It’s not available everywhere, with the areas of NSW not covered by CORSnet stations and/or network solution covering most of the western side of the state.

• Using a single GNSS unit, whether it is a surveying unit or a smartphone, accuracy is typically limited to about 3 metres in horizontal. There are varying levels of accuracy that can be achieved using a second unit and real-time corrections.

Eric grew up outdoors on a Dubbo farm, working the land and learning its rhythms. Surveying clicked instantly - same wide skies, same tough terrain, same sense of purpose. He’s never been happier than when he’s outside with a job to do.

One of the best things about being a surveyor, is that we get to use cool toys... or for a better term, amazing equipment like the drone.

• Accuracy: With the right technology, drones can achieve centimetre-level accuracy, meeting the accuracy requirements of many engineering and planning applications.

• Safety: Drones reduce the risk of human error and injury associated with traditional surveying methods.

• Versatility: Drones can be used across various projects of any size, making them a flexible tool for surveying.
