During a recent site inspection at Mt Gravatt for a Class 10a warehouse footing, I observed localised soil caving within bored pier excavations. This can occur due to loose or granular soils, softened ground from moisture or groundwater, unstable fill, prolonged exposure of the bore before concreting, or disturbance during drilling. The main concerns are loose material collecting at the base, loss of the intended founding condition, irregular pier geometry, reduced concrete quality, and difficulty maintaining the required reinforcement position and cover. Before concreting, all loose material should be removed, the required founding depth and competent bearing stratum confirmed, and where the bore cannot remain stable, temporary casing or another suitable support method should be considered and reviewed by the engineer.
