No two slabs of natural stone are the same, and that changes how a kitchen like this comes together.

These quartzite benchtops are a good example. Quartzite is a natural stone that formed when sandstone was put under intense heat and pressure, which gives it both its hardness and the sweeping movement you see through it.

The pieces arrived on Naked Stone & Co’s A-frame trailer, already cut to the curve of the island. From there it’s careful work: lifting each piece into place with suction lifters and lining up the joins so the movement in the stone carries from one section to the next.

The green tones run through the bench, the splashback and the curved kitchen island, sitting under a softly lit arch with a copper tap finishing it off.

Grey gets called safe. Done well, it's anything but.

This home in Windradyne carries the same soft palette from the street all the way through. Light grey render and white trim outside. Inside, pale grey walls, big stone-look floor tiles running from the front door through the living areas, and a grey waterfall island in the kitchen.

In the ensuite, the same family of greys goes floor to ceiling, with a herringbone niche in the shower and black tapware to give it some edge.

When the tones agree with each other, a house feels calm without trying. You stop noticing where one room ends and the next begins.

Some houses ask you to work with them, not around them.

Brookland Park at Yetholme started life in 1856 as The Australian Inn. A building with that much history deserves a kitchen that feels like it belongs there.

So the cabinetry is panelled and painted in two soft blues, with aged cup pulls, a fluted butler's sink and a brass tap. The rangehood is built out like a chimney breast, with a mantel shelf for the blue and white plates. Even the plinths are finished with a moulded skirting, a detail that suits a house this age.

The modern parts are there too, just quieter: stone benchtops, lighting tucked under the cabinets, and downlights that leave the pendants and the octagonal skylight to do the talking.

Heritage and modern can share a room. The trick is letting each one be honest about what it is.

This week a lot of people are seeing Bathurst for the first time.

Most are here for the Mountain. While they're in town, they'll walk past, eat in and look up at buildings our team has had a hand in over the years.

Three of them are in this post: The Vic, the Bathurst Rail Museum and the Cathedral of St Michael and St John.

Tablelands has been building in Bathurst since 1952. Race week is a good reminder of how much of this town gets looked after quietly the other 51 weeks of the year.

Enjoy the week, and go easy on the roads.

Spring in the Central West is when a good deck starts earning its keep.

This one runs along the back of the house under the verandah roof, with room for the two things most people want outside: somewhere to sit and somewhere to eat.

The details are what make it feel finished. Matching boards carry down the face of the deck, so the space underneath doesn't look like an afterthought. The edge is finished with a rounded trim, and the white balustrade ties it all back to the painted brick.

And it's only a step from the kitchen, so carrying dinner out is easy.
The best decks aren't always the biggest. They're the ones that get used every weekend from now until autumn.

Before a single tile went on the wall, every one of them went on the bench.

With this many colours and a diamond pattern, the layout matters as much as the tiles. Laying them out dry shows how the colours sit together, catches two similar tiles landing side by side, and lets you plan the cuts around the edges and powerpoints before anything is stuck down.

The greens pick up the cabinetry, and the rust tones keep it warm.

It's the slow part of the job, and it's why the finished wall looks easy.
