With the rain we've already had, checking your trees before and after a storm is an important part of tree maintenance to catch developing issues before they become a problem.

To check your tree:
-Look at the ground around the trunk. Do you see any cracking in the soil?
-Look at the trunk. Are there any wounds, cracking or damage visible on the trunk?
-Look at the canopy. Are there any broken or damaged branches in the canopy of the tree?

Inspecting your trees after a rain or storm event can help identify if there are any structural issues present in your trees and prevent larger issues developing that could result in significant damage to the structural integrity of your tree or whole tree failure in the future.

If you're not sure what you need to look for, our arborists can inspect your trees and walk you through what to check in future.

Have you ever wondered what happens when you don't prune your hedge regularly?

These Lilly Pillys in Thurgoona were originally planted as a hedge, but as you can see, without regular maintenance, they had grown to a point that they were starting to impact on the fence and the neighbors property next door.

The access points into the yard were unsuitable for our elevated work platform, so the team got harnessed up and climbed the trees to facilitate removal. By the time we were done, it was almost as if the trees were never there.

Now not all Lilly Pilly varieties will get this big, and most varieties can be easily kept at around the 2-3 metre mark with regular pruning.

Considering planting a hedge? Contact us to discuss the species that would suit your property and your hedging needs.

Have a hedge that you haven't had time to prune recently? We understand! Let us take the weight off your shoulders and help you maintain your hedges and trees.

Have you ever wandered along a footpath only to discover your way was blocked by branches and foliage?

We recently helped a client in Wodonga by pruning some hedges and trees that had grown over their nearby footpath. Now neighbours can enjoy their walk without running into stray branches as they go!

If you have a hedge or tree branch overhanging a footpath or driveway, our team at Local Tree Care can help you too! As an added bonus, we cart away any green waste you don't want so you won't have an awkward stockpile of branches to dispose of through the green bin for the next few weeks!

One of the key complaints we hear every Autumn, is from homeowners and tenants who are having trouble with fallen leaves clogging up the gutter.

One way to mitigate this issue is by pruning the branches away from the house. Not only does this reduce the impact of catching fallen leaves in the gutters, but it also reduces the chances of damage to your roof during wind or storm events either from branch failure or branches rubbing on parts of the house.

Our Local Tree Care arborists recently tidied up the trees surrounding this Albury residence ensuring the branches were no longer overhanging the roof and gutters, as well as some light structural pruning to increase airflow through the canopy, thereby reducing the sail effect of a dense canopy during wind events. The additional airflow will also allow the tree to redirect its energy come Spring, creating a lush and healthy canopy.

If you have branches overhanging your house, give the Local Tree Care team a call on 0417684571 and we can help make sure your trees are ready for any winter winds that may come.

A tree that looks fine on the outside could be suffering from White Rot—a fungal decay that destroys the internal wood fibers keeping your tree standing. Left unchecked, it can lead to sudden, catastrophic tree failure.

This fungi systematically breaks down lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose—the structural components that give wood its strength.

Do a quick 60-second check:
- Look down: Are there brackets or mushrooms at the base?
- Look up: Is the canopy thinning or filled with deadwood?
- Look close: Can you see any fungal growths? (also known as fruiting bodies) Is exposed wood pale, fibrous, spongy or soft to the touch?

Early detection means more management options, like targeted pruning, and monitoring before structural failure happens.

If you observe any of these issues, you should call us to assess your tree:
- Fungal fruiting bodies at identified around the base of tree, particularly if multiple fruiting bodies are present.
- The tree appears to be leaning suddenly, the soil is heaving or cracking is observed around the lower trunk/ root plate,
- The tree condition is deteriorating.

Have you noticed unusual fungal growth on your trees this season?

Have you ever wondered what the results of treatment can be for a tree impacted by invasive pests?

This Japanese Maple tree had borer damage, and thanks to our effective treatment it is still thriving today. At the time of inspection, the borer had significantly impacted a large section of the Southern side of the upper trunk.

If left untreated, this would have resulted in the premature decline and eventual death of the tree.
Borer infestation essentially cuts the supply of nutrients between the roots and the upper canopy.
The process with this tree included:
1- removal of the frass, locate and eradicate the borer.
2- selective pruning of the canopy to remove any dead/dying branches.
3- provide a stress treatment to the root plate to replenish the nutrients and encourage new root development.
4- monitor each year to determine if additional management is required.

Please note, pruning a stressed tree requires care and precision, the removal of too many branches can deplete the energy reserves and create additional issues with premature decline.

Did you know that a 2020 study by the Queensland Government found that a mature Eucalypt with an approximate diameter of 60cm is estimated to hold somewhere in the region of 1,206 kg of carbon above ground, which equates to approximately 4,424 kg of CO₂!

A juvenile tree with an approximate diameter of 5cm would hold 3kg of carbon, equating to approximately 10kg of CO₂.

To match the carbon in a mature tree, it would take approximately 442 juvenile trees.

This is one of the many reasons that our expert team at Local Tree Care look to preserve and care for mature trees wherever possible.

This hollow isn’t just a hole—it’s a home!

Small hollows can take over 100 years to form, and with over 300 Australian vertebrate species relying on tree hollows for their homes, you can imagine the competition for prime real estate is pretty tight!

So at Local Tree Care, we prefer to use targeted pruning to manage risk while retaining vital habitats for local birds and wildlife wherever possible. Targeted pruning, when done correctly doesn't lead to the fast-growing epicormic regrowth we've previously mentioned, so in most cases it may be at least 3-5 years (or more) before the tree needs another significant prune.

Pruning removes diseased, damaged and declining branches, reduces the risk of sudden limb failure, improves airflow through the canopy and enables the tree to redistribute energy reserves more efficiently. In the long term, this leads to a healthier, stronger tree that is an asset both to your property, and to our wildlife.

If you would like to learn more about keeping your older trees healthier, we are happy to help.
