What is ambient temperature, and why does it matter for commercial fridges?

Ambient temperature is the room temperature around your fridge or freezer.

If the surrounding environment is too hot, the fridge may need to work harder to maintain the correct internal temperature. This can increase energy use, strain the compressor and affect cooling performance.

This is especially important for cafés, restaurants, takeaway shops, supermarkets and convenience stores where heat, poor ventilation or direct sunlight can affect refrigeration performance.

We’ve published a full guide explaining fridge ambient temperature and what to check before buying.

One of the most common commercial fridge and freezer mistakes is blocking the ventilation.

This can happen when a fridge is pushed too close to the wall or when boxes are stored on top of the unit.

Blocked airflow can make the compressor work harder, increase energy use and affect cooling performance.

As a general guide, leave around 100mm clearance where possible, especially around the back and ventilation areas. Always check the unit requirements.

We’ve published a full guide explaining commercial fridge ventilation and why airflow matters.

A dirty condenser can make your commercial fridge work harder than it should.

When dust, grease and debris block the condenser, airflow is reduced. This can lead to higher running costs, poor cooling performance, longer compressor run time and extra strain on the system.

Regular condenser cleaning is one of the simplest maintenance habits that can help protect your fridge and improve performance.

We’ve published a full guide explaining why condenser cleaning matters and what business owners should check.

Why is your commercial fridge freezing up?

Ice build-up inside a commercial fridge can be caused by air leaks, damaged door gaskets, poor airflow, blocked vents, incorrect temperature settings, dirty condenser coils or a faulty defrost system.

If the problem is ignored, the fridge may work harder, use more energy and struggle to maintain consistent cooling.

We’ve published a full guide explaining the common causes and what to check first before the problem becomes more serious.
