A 228-foot petrified tree in Thailand holds a Guinness World Record.

The massive trunk was discovered in 2003 in Tak Province in northern Thailand. Excavations revealed an original length of 72.2 meters or 237 feet. Researchers studying its shape estimated that the living tree may have once towered more than 100 meters (comparable to a 30-story building) above an ancient tropical rainforest.

Flooding later damaged part of the exposed trunk, reducing its surviving length to 69.7 meters.

In 2022, Guinness World Records officially recognized it as the longest silicified fossil tree trunk in the world.

Thai authorities currently date the petrified tree to at least 120,000 years old.
