It may have been a year since my last post (good on the tools, not on the admin or socials), but I’ve been busy and I’m still doing stuff!
Here’s a fun one, we bought a house with a tiled roof. Not at all what I’m into, so I changed it.
Over Christmas & New Years I did a tile to tin re roof as a one man show (wouldn’t recommend - but my incredible wife Kim & amazing mate Eugene gave me a hugely appreciated hand with the removal of the tiles & insulating).
I also wanted to add in something fun, given it’s not every day you get to be creative. I’ve loved the slate tile roofing that I’ve seen photos of in Europe (and the couple in Hobart) but I’m not a stone guy, I’m a metal guy. So I decided to make some of my own, with metal.
I handmade many hundreds of tiles (shangles as I’m affectionately calling them) with COLORBOND steel Shale Grey & unicotesteel Weathered Iron from Central Roofing Supplies. It wasn’t quick, but it sure was enjoyable! They are now all installed and we have a pretty new feature to go with our fresh new roof.
Are they mint? Absolutely not, but I’ve learnt a lot and now feel much more well equip to do more projects like this!
I’ve also since gotten to share my learnings with and learn from the lads at prospectroofingtas too (keep an eye out for an amazing project that I got to do with them in the near future)!
I would love to do more of this kind of thing. I’ve got a few weird ideas for layouts, shapes and formats so if you’re wanting to get rid of some money in a cool way - I’m your guy!
