Apparently architecture isn’t the only thing we like putting people through their paces for. 😅🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

Epic Architecture was very proud to sponsor this year’s Duval Dam Buster — including a few running entries to get more locals out there and amongst it.

We love backing the events that make our region feel like a community, and this one absolutely delivers: plenty of grit, a bit of friendly suffering, lots of cheering, and a seriously good local turnout.

Huge congratulations to everyone who ran, walked, volunteered, organised and supported the event. We’re proud to play a small part in helping local events like this keep growing.

See you on the course next year… maybe for the 50k!! 👀

Jena is still in the USA, continuing a series of valuable meetings with leaders working across housing, community development and sustainability.

This week’s conversations included representatives from the Native American housing sector, exploring how sustainable design can be advanced through both housing development and construction methodology—from energy efficiency and long-term resilience to durable, culturally responsive solutions.

These discussions are an important exchange of knowledge: bringing Epic’s Australian expertise in high-performance, off-grid and climate-responsive architecture into an international context, while learning from the experience, priorities and place-based knowledge of communities across the American Midwest.

The challenges may cross borders, but so can the ideas that help address them. We’re excited about the relationships being formed—and the possibilities that emerge when expertise, research and local knowledge come together.

A little international commute ✈️

Jena is back in the US this week, connecting architecture, research and practice across both sides of the Pacific.

Great architecture is never designed in isolation.

As a project moves from concept into detailed design, some of the most important work happens through close collaboration with the people who will ultimately help make it real — builders, engineers, energy assessors, suppliers and specialist consultants.

It’s in these conversations that we test the details:
Can it be built?
Does it perform as intended?
Is there a smarter way to resolve it?
Does the specification actually work on site?

For us, detailing isn’t simply about documenting a design that has already been decided. It’s an iterative process of bringing together architectural intent, building science, engineering, construction knowledge and real-world product information.

Because the best outcome isn’t just a beautiful drawing.

It’s a building where design, performance and construction all work together!

Today we had the opportunity to visit some (crossing fingers) future clients, walk their beautiful property, hear their vision, and start imagining what could be possible. As an added bonus, we made plenty of new four-legged friends along the way. 🐴🐶

Every site has its own story, and every family brings something different to the design process. There’s nothing quite like standing on the land, understanding its character, and seeing the opportunities unfold in front of you.

A fabulous way to finish the week! Here’s to new connections, exciting possibilities, and a few extra pats for our newest friends. 🤍

I spend my days designing homes that perform as beautifully as they look... from high-performance homes to off-grid projects that challenge what's possible.

I'm also a PhD candidate researching the future of sustainable housing, so if I'm not on site or in the studio, you'll probably find me buried in journal articles or testing new ideas.

📸 A little appreciation post for the brilliant Andy Macpherson Andy Macpherson Studio

We recently had Andy photograph some of our projects- including this Uralla off-grid home- and honestly, we couldn't be happier with how the images turned out!! He has an incredible ability to capture not just the architecture, but the feeling of a place. An absolute legend to work! ... and just look at that aperture 😉
