South Australia is looking at new ways to get more homes built in regional and remote communities, including modular housing.

But building the home is only part of the planning. In areas where mains services aren’t readily available, considering water storage and wastewater management early can help ensure the whole property is ready for the long term.

That can mean incorporating solutions such as concrete rainwater tanks, septic tanks or wastewater treatment systems into the plans from the beginning.

A range of modern modular homes aimed at fast-tracking housing delivery in regional and remote communities, are on display in Adelaide's north.

Is your rainwater system ready for spring?

A little routine care helps you get the most from your tank. As the weather warms up, take time to check these parts of your system:
>Clear leaves and debris from gutters and downpipes so rainwater can flow freely into your tank.
>Check inlet screens and remove any build-up. Make sure screens are intact to help keep insects and debris out.
>If you have a first-flush device, clean it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
>Check that your pump starts when you use a tap or fixture connected to the tank.

Looking after the whole system helps your tank keep doing its job throughout the year. If anything needs attention beyond routine checks, contact a qualified professional. Never enter a rainwater tank.

South Australia has recorded its wettest winter since 1978, with rainfall across the state 71% above average.

It’s a timely reminder that rainwater storage isn’t only about preparing for dry conditions. It’s also about having the capacity to capture rainfall when it arrives.

A properly sized concrete rainwater tank can provide dependable, long-term storage for homes, farms and businesses helping make the most of one of our most valuable natural resources.

When people think about going off-grid, solar panels are often the first thing that comes to mind.

But there's another side to off-grid living that's just as important: where your water comes from and where your wastewater goes.

For homes and properties without access to mains water or the sewerage network, rainwater storage and an appropriate onsite wastewater system need to be considered early in the planning process.

This article from Fleurieu Tiny Houses takes a look at what's involved in off-grid tiny house living in South Australia, including water collection and wastewater management.

For Ri-Industries, it's an area we've been working in for decades, manufacturing concrete rainwater tanks, septic tanks and wastewater treatment systems for South Australian properties.

Did you know your local SA council might pay you to install a rainwater tank?

Local councils across South Australia are increasingly offering green living rebates to encourage household water conservation. As an example, the City of West Torrens is currently offering rebates up to $400 until 30 June 2027 or until funds run out.

Whether you’re located in West Torrens or elsewhere in SA, it’s always worth checking your local council’s website to see what sustainability subsidies are available before buying a rainwater tank.

For anyone planning a tiny home in South Australia, the regulations have been updated, including changes affecting approvals, occupancy and essential services.

One important consideration is how the property will manage wastewater. If a tiny home will be used as a permanent residence, particularly on rural land without a sewer connection, an approved onsite wastewater system may be required. Requirements vary depending on the type of tiny home, how it will be used and the local council area, so it’s important to seek advice early in the planning process.

This recently updated article provides a useful overview of the regulations:

Discover South Australia’s rules for tiny homes on foundations and wheels. Covers new rental reforms, PlanSA council requirements, and more.
