BIG NEWS FOR ROCKY SWIMMING 🚀
Rockhampton is on the verge of becoming a training hub for swim teams preparing for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, thanks to an incredible personal investment by Shane Kingston, owner/operator of Splash Aquatics Group and head coach of Rocky City Swimming Club.
Shane is investing $350,000 of his own money to upgrade the 2nd World War Memorial Aquatic Centre to Olympic standard including a state-of-the-art Swiss timing system, touch pads, 5M Big Screen Video Screen scoreboard, and new meet manager system.
Rockhampton Regional Council is contributing $160,000 to upgrade the starting blocks on the 50m pool to FINA Standard.
These upgrades will be completed this month, allowing full testing before the centre hosts the 2026 Queensland Country Swimming Championships in January, the biggest meet ever held in Central Queensland.
This investment also positions Rockhampton as a prime training destination for national and international teams in the lead-up to 2032. With world-class swimmers already arriving for the Rocky City Twilight Meet on Nov 28–30, the region’s reputation continues to grow.
More than 200 CQ swimmers will compete for over $20,000 in prize money, with teams from Rackley, Korea and Brazil joining us in Rockhampton.
🚧 Please Note 🚧
There will be sporadic 50m pool closures throughout the week to safely remove and reinstall the timing system structure and framing as part of these upgrades. We appreciate your patience while we complete this once-in-a-generation improvement for our region. We will procide further her update this morning in regard to the closures required today.
Rockhampton is stepping onto the national stage and we’re just getting started.
