On the left window ‘Fire & Life Insurance Office’, on the middle window ‘Council Clerks Office’ and the word ‘Chamber’ on the right hand window. The sign between the door and gate at right starts with ‘Municipality of Albury …’
The ‘Border Post’ was Albury’s first newspaper, starting in October 1856, last published in 1903. The Albury & District Historical Society have recently organised digitising of the first 5 years of the ‘Border Post’ and they can now be accessed online at the Trove website, go to https://trove.nla.gov.au/search/advanced/category/newspapers and search for Albury then refine your search by selecting 1850-1859 under ‘Date range’ then select ‘Border Post’. Once you are there you can use suitable search words to search for topics of interest.
We have both the ‘Albury Banner’ and ‘Border Morning Mail’ newspapers digitised on Trove up to 1954, all fully searchable at no cost.

OUR NEXT MEETING, next Wednesday, October 14, 7.30 pm Albury Commercial Club.
Recently St David’s Uniting Church celebrated the 120-year anniversary of the blessing and opening of the church on the corner of Olive and Wilson streets. A brief history of the church will be presented.
We will then have a few short presentations relating to some significant burials at Albury Pioneer Cemetery. In October last year we had a cemetery walk to recognise a number of prominent locals who are interred in the cemetery. However, we had very heavy rain so we had less than 40 turn up. So a number of the locals buried in the Pioneer Cemetery and were acknowledged that day will be recognised with short talks outlining their significant contributions to our local history.

Edward Pardey’s Store was a grocery store operating for about 20 years in the early 1900s at the corner of Olive Street and Guinea Street (now Norma Restaurant, 500 Guinea street). At that time the highway to and from Sydney went along Guinea street making the street prominent for business. Just across the road from Pardey’s shop was the Star Hotel and on the next corner (Guinea and David streets) was Bowden’s butcher shop.

Two photos of the butcher shop in Wilson street of Lawrence Buckley. He started there in 1892. The shop in the larger photo does not look like it was on a corner, but it was located on Wilson street. The smaller photo implies that at some point he moved to the corner of Wilson and Macauley streets. He certainly was at the corner in 1904. It's a bit of a puzzle.
John Hossack, Funeral Directors, now occupy both sites. Buckley came to Albury from Beechworth as a 15-year old in about 1868, working as a butchers’ boy for TH Gehrig. He opened his own butchery business on this site in 1892.

Anzac House in Dean street was opened 100 years ago this month as the new premises of the Commercial Club. On September 1, 1926 Governor General Sir Dudley de Chair performed the official opening.
After the Commercial Club moved to larger premises across the road, this building became Anzac House. In the 1930s became the home of the renowned McPherson Studios, established by Duncan McPherson and specialising in commercial photography, portraiture and wedding photos.
To the right is The Bank of NSW, now Westpac.

Hume Dam construction, 1924 - a photo taken from the Victorian side showing an early stage of construction of the earth embankment. The concrete core wall at the centre of the earth wall is well underway. In the background is the tower that supported the flying fox used in constructing the spillway. On the hill to the right is the black smokestack of the electrical power plant. Beyond that is Hume Weir Village on the NSW side. Note teams of horses working across the construction site.

Albury: A Moment in Time is an exciting new community photography project run by Albury & District Historical Society, with the support of the Wodonga Albury Camera Club and the Albury LibraryMuseum.
Our aim is simple: to capture Albury & District as it looks today, its streets, businesses, people, heritage and everyday life, so that future generations have an authentic record to look back on. Think of it as our community’s own year book, a moment in time preserved for tomorrow.

Horse drawn carriages in Dean street, late 1880s. The view is looking to the east, east of Kiewa street. The fence of the 1860 Courthouse can be recognised on the left of the street. On the right is A Goetz, watchmaker and jeweller – he moved to the site in 1886 after operating from Kiewa street. Next is A Cass, wholesale and retail fruiterer, he advertised at that site from 1878 to the mid-1880s. The next store is Bon Marche drapery, at that site for about 10 years from the mid-1880s. The Albury Banner newspaper office is the tall building then the second of three buildings at that site occupied by the AMP Society – the first burnt down in December 1885, the second was demolished to make for the third which opened in 1941.
