Reasons to use Native tree mulch
β
Conserves moisture: A mulch layer reduces evaporation from the soil, helping plants cope with hot, dry weather.
β
Regulates soil temperature: It keeps roots cooler during summer and reduces temperature swings.
β
Improves soil over time: As organic mulch breaks down, it adds organic matter and supports soil structure.
Feeds soil life: Fungi, bacteria, worms, and other beneficial organisms use the decomposing material, contributing to a healthy soil ecosystem
β
Suppresses weeds: A sufficiently thick layer blocks light and makes it harder for many weeds to establish.
β
Protects tree roots: It provides a protective layer over the soil, reducing compaction and physical disturbance from mowing or foot traffic.
How to use it
For most plants and trees, aim for roughly 10-15cm of mulch, spread broadly over the root zone. Be sure to keep it a few centimetres away from trunks and stems as consistently damp conditions can encourage rot and other problems.
