word Palace spelled out in panels across the top of a Melbourne cinema.

Around 35 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions avoided annually as well.

They take on energy through off peak, then run the venue on it when
grid rates hit their highest.

The array above them spells the word Palace across the roof. Hardest
part of the whole job.

Most rooftop solar is designed to be invisible. This one isn't.

At Palace Westgarth, RTP Electrical is using contrasting panels to spell out "Palace" across the roof, readable as you come down High Street.

Same output, same engineering, with the building's identity built into the array.

A projector room is the wrong place for battery storage. Batteries need ventilation, and there are rules about where they can and can't sit.

So positioning the batteries and the new inverters became one of the real design problems on this project, solved with a purpose-built rack engineered specifically for the site.

This is the part of commercial solar nobody sees. It's also the part that decides whether a system works.

Around 160 panels have come off the roof at Palace Westgarth. The originals were more than ten years old.

The replacements will produce roughly double the solar per square metre, which matters on a power-hungry commercial site where the roof space is fixed and can't be extended.

The old panels are going to a local facility rather than to landfill.

The previous system had been on this roof for over a decade, out of warranty, partially working, and no longer matching how the venue uses energy.

RTP Electrical removed it in full and replaced it with a new system that gets more generation out of the same roof space, plus battery storage the original never had.

Ageing solar isn't just underperforming. It's occupying roof space that could be doing more.

Five projectors running seven days a week. Then the audio, the air conditioning, the sound systems, the bar and the restaurant downstairs.

That's a serious daily energy load, and it's why RTP Electrical designed a battery into the system, storing what the solar produces and releasing it back through the building as demand calls for it.
