This is the philosophy behind everything we do.

Plants over concrete. Ecology over aesthetics. Soft over hardscapes. Wildness over structure. Relinquish control, reveal wonder. Let it grow wild. Health inside and out. Soil over everything.

Not a checklist — a way of seeing. When you start designing with nature instead of against it, something shifts. The garden stops being a project and starts being a place. 🌿

What’s one thing you’d relinquish control of in your outdoor space?

Hey people the last plant list was well received so here’s another to go and buy at ya local nursery!

If your garden has semi-shade, mottled light, or sits under the canopy of large gums, mallees or local woodland trees — these eight species were made for it.

Southern woodland understorey plants are some of the most ecologically valuable species you can put in the ground. They attract critical pollinators, create mid-storey pathways for birds and insects moving between the upper canopy and the ground, and bring a kind of layered, living beauty that full-sun gardens rarely achieve.

They’ll also grow in full sun — but where they truly come into their own is under canopy. Dappled light, filtered shade, the cool of a woodland edge. That’s where these plants belong, and that’s where they’ll reward you most.

If you live in hilly country, surrounded by woodland, or have mature trees on your property — this is your understorey. These are your plants.

Go find them at your local native plant nursery. Support the people growing them.

💾 Save this list for your next planting season.

Imagine starting your day here. Or ending it.

This is a real project — and this is exactly what our client gets to do. Morning coffee in the quiet before the day starts. An evening by the fire when it’s done. A book in the afternoon light. Time with family. Or just a few minutes of genuine contemplation in a space that’s actually alive around you.

These moments are often the ones that matter most. And where you have them changes everything about them.

A garden designed to belong to its place doesn’t just look beautiful. It changes the quality of the time you spend in it. The sounds are different. The light moves differently. You’re not sitting next to a garden — you’re sitting inside something living.

That’s what we design for. Not just the aesthetics. The moments.

💾 Save this if your outdoor space isn’t giving you this yet.

It’s me mate, started this thing endemicenvironments_sa in 2013 many moons ago for those who have just started following welcome! I’m Steve Dedrick — Garden Designer, Consultant & Environmental Practitioner

20+ years in and the journey just keeps getting better.

On paper I’m a one man show — but the moment a project comes to life, it’s anything but. Great contractors, great clients, great humans all showing up and making it happen. That’s the part that keeps me going on the days this solo gig gets bloody hard.

The work is the most fulfilling of my career, the demand keeps growing, and honestly? Watch this space — some exciting things are coming. 👀

Embrace the storms, enjoy the calm, get your hands dirty and trust the process. That’s good life advice and pretty good garden design advice too. 🌿

Definitely not just a garden plan. It’s a living system. Zones designed around how we actually move and live. Groupings of plants working together — feeding the soil, attracting pollinators, holding water, building resilience. Every element serving more than one purpose. Every corner earning its place.

The top-view concept brings it all into focus — food forests meeting native habitat, outdoor living woven into productive landscape, hardscape kept only where it truly serves. The home and garden becoming one integrated whole.

Heya! If you’ve just started following, that’s bloody awesome. Thanks for being here and I hope you stick around. 👋

I wanted to touch base and let you know what actually happens when you reach out to us.

When you fill in our form, we’ll get back to you within 48 hours and book in a 20–30 minute call. We go through an informal, relaxed chat about your project and property. That’s it. No strings attached.

On that call we’ll cover everything — your site, your location, what the land’s doing, what you’re dreaming of, water, what’s not working, and where you want to be in 5 to 10 years.

We work with people who are ready to invest in a lifetime project — and are serious about doing it properly. If that’s you, we’d love to hear from you.

The link’s in the bio when you’re ready. 🌿

From ground cover to canopy — 5 Native local SA plants that need zero watering once
established, and what each one does for your garden while it’s at it.

Most people choose plants for how they look. These were chosen for what they do — for
the soil, for pollinators, for birds, for the long-term health of the landscape they belong to.
Swipe to meet all five.

🐝 Save this if you’re planning a garden that works harder than it looks.

What does a “Wild Retreat Garden” actually improve?

A Home garden that connects to the land: Local plants, soil that breathes, and quiet corners for people & birds. It calms the day, teaches kids where life comes from, and brings pollinators back to the streets.
