I did the old choppy-choppy and shaved a little too much off, so here we are, realising again that I have a small chin.

Doing your garden shouldn't be impulsive like that; it should be well thought out, thorough, and well-designed. So engage a designer.

One of the things I love about designing gardens is that every site is unique. Every site presents different challenges and things you need to work out: every corner of the house, every part of the property has varying elements, vegetation, and existing materials.

It is a real challenge bringing this all together alongside the client's requests (what they want and how they want the garden to perform), while also understanding the local habitats that thrive in these spaces.

Every design has its own uniqueness. It is never just a copy and paste; it is well thought out and structured in a way that is tailored to that client's property. It is about finding the right recipe for a successful garden: a thriving native habitat, productive fruit growing, and an absolute sanctuary you love coming home to.

It is so important for our home life and our home garden space, just having that vibrance we can wake up to and come home to.

Designing gardens is what I'm passionate about: ecologically sound, thriving gardens that use native and productive plants to truly add to the local suburban biodiversity.

I love helping clients move past the problems they have with their current gardens, acreage, or property, and bringing them into a space that is useful and enjoyable. I want to create a space they want to come home to, where they want to invite friends over to spend time in the garden, and where they can enjoy the birds, the insects, the pollinators, and the plants.

A bit of a 2D concept for a front habitat garden. What do you think?

Down in the Adelaide Plains area, using a single mallee gum tree to create a nice canopy in this compact front garden. We are using local materials, with recycled bricks from on-site for the benching and refashioning the existing stone as well, creating a vibrant little entranceway for the occupants to enjoy.

Looking forward to seeing this one come to fruition.

When looking to renovate your garden, start a new garden, or uplift your current garden or acreage, it is so important to think design before planning and before implementing anything. Engaging a good, thoughtful designer who considers the resourceful nature of what is already on site creates a great opportunity to reuse and refashion materials that might ordinarily be dumped, such as:

• Existing rocks
• Existing bricks
• Existing concrete
• Existing vegetation

Knowing what to keep and what not to keep is key. A lot of times, it looks like a bunch of existing vegetation needs to be removed, when in actual fact it just needs a rethink; good design helps elevate and bring it to a higher place.

Design brings all of these ideas together so we can think smartly about how to be resourceful with what exists, marrying that with what we propose to implement.

Late winter: time to start rounding off the year and thinking about your projects.

Tree canopies are some of the most life-bringing habitats on our earth, and I've seen so much removal and destruction, particularly over the past decade or more, with land clearing, development, the fear of gum trees, and so on. It's a real shame considering how beautiful they are, the life they bring and harbour, the oxygen they create, and the cooling they provide.

Within our design process, we're always looking at how we can best recreate or implement more native plant canopy using mallee gums. A mallee is a eucalyptus that is a lot smaller than most large gums, but it can be equally as important to plant with its small-to-medium canopy size. It acts as a stepping stone and bridge to larger gums for smaller bird species: they can shelter within the smaller mallees and move into your garden's shrubs with ease, without feeling unsafe.

Think about this in the design for your home, property, and garden. Be the one to help bring back canopies to our suburbs.

Native plant design should definitely tick the box of diversity. We are trying to add to local suburban biodiversity by mimicking local ecosystems, presenting a wild native garden that creates and harbours habitat.

At the same time, we want to ensure we have a well-designed, high-diversity, high-ecological-value garden that performs like a Ferrari. It hums with life, creates engagement with its human occupants and stewards, and sustains longevity for the future.

It also showcases how beautiful local species are when they work and mix together. A garden can truly be like your own personal botanic garden, showpiecing the best local native plants from your region and beyond.

This was a major milestone for me earlier this year when I got to feature in Gardening Australia magazine Gardening Australia .

Young Steve probably wouldn't believe this, but here it is, and I am forever grateful to those who have helped me along the way.

A big shout-out to AB Bishop for your help this year. I really appreciate all the time and effort it takes to produce these sorts of publications, and it's never lost on me how amazing these opportunities are.

A little plant dreamer from Adelaide getting to live out a childhood dream and showcase some of my thoughts in what is possibly the greatest gardening magazine in Australia. I just wanted to celebrate that for a moment and look towards the future with lots of greenery.

Make sure you get a good plant design in place before you start planting.

If your intention is to have a well-structured and well-performing garden, there's a time and place for putting plants in quickly. But if you're just planting because that's the only process you know, then that could be the wrong approach.

Generally, I see plants going in before the rest of the garden is planned out. With our designs and our projects, planting is planned thoroughly and then executed towards the end of a garden project's life.

We want to plan before we plant, ensuring the garden project has as much success as possible.
