Increased heat, UV exposure and drier conditions can put additional stress on outdoor timber. Spring is a good time to inspect and prepare timber before the harsher summer conditions arrive.

Look out for signs of cracking, splitting, weathering, deterioration or loose fixings. Regular maintenance can help extend the life of timber structures and keep them safe, functional and looking their best.

How do you stabilise a steep hillside after urgent tree removal?

Following the Giant pine scale biosecurity response in Highbury Aqueduct Reserve, introduced species of pines were removed to stop the spread. This left sections of the hillside exposed ahead of winter rainfall.

Working across slopes of up to 40 degrees, our team delivered a practical erosion-control and revegetation solution, following strict hygiene and decontamination requirements:

- Coir logs to slow runoff and retain sediment
- Silt fencing to protect downslope areas
- Approximately 3,000 locally native plants
- Native grass and groundcover seedi like t
- Ongoing watering and targeted w**d control

The result: immediate erosion protection, backed by native vegetation that will strengthen the hillside over time.

Works completed for Department for Environment and Water.

Controlled ecological burning is an important tool for managing native grasslands.

Our team recently carried out a carefully managed cool burn at the City of Salisbury’s BAGSPA native grass site, within an established stand of Themeda triandra (Kangaroo Grass). The burn removed accumulated biomass and senescent vegetation, helping create improved conditions for new growth and native grass regeneration.

This work is part of our ongoing work at the site, alongside targeted w**d control, monitoring, seasonal seeding and seed collection to support a healthier, more diverse and resilient native grassland over time.
