Southern Fleurieu Health Services | Emergency Department
•
The triage and waiting area at the new Southern Fleurieu Health Services Emergency Department in Victor Harbor. Designed to be the first point of calm in what is often a stressful moment, the space balances clinical functionality with a palette and materiality that feels considered and welcoming.

Southern Fleurieu Health Service | Emergency Department
•
Late last year, Wiltshire Swain are proud to have delivered the new Emergency Department at Southern Fleurieu Health Services in Victor Harbor, the first major upgrade to this regional hospital in a decade. The $16.8M redevelopment quadrupled patient capacity from 5 to 20 spaces, delivering the Fleurieu Peninsula a facility built to serve its growing coastal community for years to come.
•
A highlight of this project was our meaningful collaboration with Cedric Varcoe, a Ramindjeri-Ngarrindjeri and Narungga man and artist, whose artwork is woven throughout the building from the outside in. Laser cut facade panels screen the ambulance bay for privacy, etched artwork is embedded in the concrete pathway to welcome patients and families on arrival, while delicate glazing film is applied across treatment bays to carry the story through to the heart of the ED. Cedric’s contribution ensures this is not only a place of clinical care, but a culturally welcoming environment for every person who walks through its doors.

2026 Architecture Awards Night | Australian Institute of Architects SA Chapter
•
Last month the team attended the Australian Institute of Architects SA Chapter Architecture Awards at the Hilton Adelaide, where the Noarlunga Hospital Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit received the Award for Public Architecture.
•
A great evening shared with so many talented colleagues and professionals across the South Australian architecture community. We often strive for our designs to achieve a sense of “invisibility to its users” where the patient and staff workflows are simply successful in allowing clinicians to work efficiently while patient safety, privacy, wellbeing, autonomy and dignity is maintained. To have our work recognised in the Public Architecture category is not something we take lightly, particularly for a healthcare project competing against civic buildings.
•
Congratulations to all the practices acknowledged on the night.

NAIDOC Week 2026 | 50 Years of Deadly
•
This NAIDOC Week we celebrate the power of First Nations culture and art shaping the spaces we design.
•
At Southern Fleurieu Health Services Emergency Department in Victor Harbor, we had the privilege of collaborating with Cedric Varcoe, a Ramindjeri-Ngarrindjeri and Narungga man and artist. Pictured here is Cedric’s artwork embedded and etched into the external concrete entry pathway, one of several touchpoints throughout the building where his story welcomes patients and families.
•
This NAIDOC Week we honour Cedric and all First Nations artists, Elders and community members whose voices make our work more meaningful and more deeply connected to Country.

2026 Architecture Awards | Noarlunga Hospital Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit
•
We’re beyond proud and thrilled to share that over the weekend, our Noarlunga Hospital Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit has received an Award for Public Architecture at the Australian Institute of Architects SA Chapter Architecture Awards hosted at the Hilton.
•
The project was shaped through genuine collaboration with First Nations representatives, people with lived experience, clinical staff, consultants and our design team. That shared input is woven through every part of the building, from the landscaped courtyards and yarning spaces to interiors that favour a calm, domestic quality over an institutional one embedding cultural identity and connection to place.
•
Healthcare projects rarely feature in design and architecture awards. Strict compliance requirements including considered sight lines, infection control, durability and anti-ligature design, mean these buildings are often led by function above all else. This result reflects what’s possible when those requirements are met without losing sight of dignity, comfort and a sense of home.
•
A proud moment for the whole team, and a reminder of what collaborative design in healthcare can achieve.

European Healthcare Design Conference + Awards 2026
•
Earlier this year, we submitted the Noarlunga Hospital Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit into the Mental Health and Interior Design and the Arts categories within the 2026 European Healthcare Design Awards.
•
The new building sits on a public hospital campus adjacent an existing acute mental health inpatient unit, requiring a sensitive architectural response that balances clinical safety with dignity, autonomy and therapeutic benefit. High architectural quality is achieved through deliberate rejection of institutional typologies in favour of a domestic, non clinical environment supported by generous natural light, landscaped courtyards and strong visual connection between interior and exterior spaces.
•
In May we were advised that the project had been shortlisted in the Mental Health Category, and we presented the project online to a live judging panel. This week, WS Director Mark Wiltshire is in London for the conference and award ceremony - good luck to all the shortlisted entrants!
