That pile is what a lot of people forget to budget for.

Getting the concrete cut is the easy part. Then you're standing in the yard with a heap of broken slab that can't go in the kerbside bin. Concrete and rubble are banned from general waste in SA, so now you're hiring a heavy-waste skip, and the smallest ones start around $230.

This is the bit that catches people out. Concrete's dense, so a small skip hits its weight limit long before it looks full. Load it wrong and you're up for overload fees or a second bin. Add the weekend spent breaking it up and barrowing it by hand, plus a council permit if the skip has to sit out on the street.

Or we take it with us. The machine does the lifting, it's gone when the job's done, and there's no skip parked on your verge for a week.

Cutting concrete looks simple from the outside. The part that matters happens before the blade goes anywhere near it.

Older slabs are full of surprises. Water lines, electrical conduit, gas, all run through backyards that have been added to over the years, and none of it's marked. Cut blind and a quick job turns into a flooded trench or a very bad afternoon.

So we check what's under there first, then cut around what needs to stay.
