COOP HIMMELB(L)AU was founded in Vienna in 1968 and has since then been operating under the direction of CEO and design principal Wolf dPrix in the fields of art, architecture, urban planning, and design. In numerous countries, the team has realized museums, concert halls, science, and office buildings as well as residential buildings. Presently COOP HIMMELB(L)AU is working on various projects in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. The company’s most well-known international projects include the rooftop remodeling Falkestrasse in Vienna, the multifunctional UFA Cinema Center in Dresden, the BMW Welt in Munich, the Akron Art Museum in Ohio, the Central Los Angeles Area High School #9 for the Visual and Performing Arts, the Busan Cinema Center in Korea and the Dalian International Conference Center in China and the House of Music in Aalborg, Denmark. Recently have been completed the Musée des Confluences in Lyon, France, the European Central Bank (ECB) in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, the Museum of Contemporary Art & Planning Exhibition (MOCAPE) in Shenzhen, China, and the PANEUM – Wunderkammer des Brotes in Asten, Austria.

More than exhibition spaces that display diverse forms of digital and analog visual information, they function as spaces that cater to urban experiences. This means that art should be able to flow out of the building, and the city to flow inside. This zone becomes a hybrid space where various types of people can meet and unexpected events occur.

The Falkestrasse loft conversion, in the inner city of Vienna, was the first realized deconstructivist building in the world, gaining international recognition for its new kind of architecture.

Out of the archive: Open House, Malibu, California, USA 1989

The house – slanted body and vaulted skin – is one hundred square meters. Accessible only by a flight of stairs. The construction of the anchoring enables a double-glazed skin. It is protected from the sun by adjustable louvers, which can also change the lighting.

Out of the archive: Central Los Angeles Area High School #9, USA 2008

Central Los Angeles Area High School #9 offers core education for grades 9-12 as well as courses in the visual arts, performing arts, music, and dance. A tower with a spiral ramp in the shape of the number nine rises above the theater’s fly tower and serves as a widely visible symbol for art in the city.

Out of the archive: The Cloud, Vienna, Austria 1968

The concept for the Cloud was developed in 1968 as part of a research commission from the municipality of Vienna. The study “Dwelling Forms of the Future” dealt with concepts for expanding existing living experiences by introducing changeable, mobile spaces. The Cloud was constructed down to the tiniest detail and was supposed to be exhibited at documenta 5 in Kassel after being assembled in Vienna.

Out of the archive: Energy Roof Perugia, Perugia, Italy 2009

A new public space and attractor takes shape. Its history, dynamic circulation flows, and urban liveliness defines the place. The paradigmatic design of the Energy Roof creates a distinctive and highly recognizable icon for the city, and a statement for aesthetic sustainability, corresponding with the historic buildings of Via Mazzini.

Out of the archive: Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Bilbao, Spain 1991

A central plaza is framed by two exhibition spaces in elongated halls with a compact main building for Guggenheim’s permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. Next to it, and floating above it, is a group of multifunctional spaces for artists, condensed into just a few volumes. A spiral skywalk connects the studios to the exhibition spaces on all levels; as a dynamic formal element, it penetrates them and opens up the introverted studio blocks to one another and to the city.

Out of the archive: Dalian International Conference Center, Dalian, China 2012

The perforated aluminum slats of the exterior shell provide daylight to the inside, and give the building its striking sculptural appearance. The slats opened in some of the public areas offer selective views of the city and the bay of Dalian. New synergies are created “between the exterior skin, reacting to the climate, and the landscape surrounding it.” The inside pushes the skin outside.
