Out of the archive: The Open Parliament of Albania, Tirana, Albania 2011

The design incorporates fundamental democratic values such as openness, transparency and public co-determination. The simultaneity of competing political concepts within a democratic society is translated into the design concept: Different building elements are not opposed, but coexist in one building ensemble with a contemporary aesthetic that allows visualizing new functions and meanings.

Out of the archive: Nefertiti - Luxury Hotel Tower, Changsha, China 2021

The Hotel Tower appears as a single sculpture, connected to Snow World via a plaza. From the main viewpoints, it has a fluid, ellipse-based cylindrical shape whose profile changes in an elegant flow from top to bottom: 3D studies of the bust of the Egyptian queen Nefertiti were used as inspiration to realize this iconic shape.

The center of the “Wunderkammer des Brotes” is formed by a circular atrium, in which selected items of the collection are individually suspended from above, as in a differentiated crystal chandelier. The atrium is enclosed by a spiral stair from which visitors can look at the items from various perspectives.

The atrium with its visible steel support structure occupies nearly the entire height between the office towers. Connecting and transitioning platforms horizontally divide this interstitial space into three sections with heights from 45 to 60 meters. Just like public squares, they invite visitors to communicate while hanging gardens ensure a pleasant indoor climate.

The exterior skin, which is structurally independent from the mounting framework of the museum buildings, consists of an outer layer of perforated metal panels and a climate envelope made from insulated glass: pollution free systems and facilities use renewable energy sources through solar and geothermal energy, and only systems with high energy efficiency have been implemented.

Out of the archive: Cloud Roof - Fair extension, Riva del Garda, Italy, 2012

The main element of the design proposal is conceived as a continuous sculptural roof, which loosely frames permeable plazas, a main public boulevard and the fair pavilions in one continuous space. The roof acts as a virtual sky enabling the collection of the multiple parts of the “Fiere” into a coherent ensemble with a consistent image and multiple functionality, providing a clear signal to visitors and users of the extent of the fair premises and an unmistakable way-finding system.

How do you create the conditions for good acoustics despite a reduction of mass? The first drawings already show the basic idea of the Pavilion, which is to introduce architectural elements that are on the one hand the spatial transformation of sound sequences, and on the other hand develop sound reflecting and absorbing properties through their pyramid-like shape: a soundscape.

For this project in 2020 we translated Keith Richards opening guitar solo "Gimme Shelter" in 3 dimensions which includes all harmonics in the soundscape. The string bending moment captures the unique identity of the guitar sound and becomes frozen in time.

Out of the archive: Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, Germany 2005

The project expands the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, built in 1876, and is also meant to be a conceptual renewal. Main elements are the glass facade, the gate to the Academy, the inner court, and the studio terraces. The open configuration of buildings produces a sequence of transitory connecting spaces between the park and urban spaces.
