Can artistic freedom and creative expression best advance environmental solutions and policy today?

Solving environmental challenges requires strong governance and scientific data, but it also depends on independent creators who can question norms, expose hidden impacts, and inspire/motivate communities to act.

We want your insight! Which of these is the most vital role of artistic freedom in environmental action?

A) Unfiltered climate critique (holding institutions and industries accountable)
B) Translating complex science (turning data and climate models into lived human stories)
C) Inspiring local civic action (mobilising communities around conservation)
D) Envisioning future sustainable cities (imagining radically greener ways of living)

Drop your vote (A, B, C, or D) in the comments below, or tell us how creative projects have influenced your own perspective on sustainability! 💬👇

🌍 Two weeks of Inhabitat MSc mobility in Kaunas
Learning in an international Master’s programme extends far beyond a single classroom or university.

Inhabitat MSc students and academic staff from partner universities recently came together for a two-week mobility period at KTU Kauno technologijos universitetas/Kaunas University of Technology in Lithuania. 🇱🇹

During their time in Kaunas, participants had the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and develop new skills, exchange ideas and experiences across countries, and experience KTU's academic environment and student life.

The mobility period also brought members of the international Inhabitat MSc community together in person, strengthening connections and encouraging knowledge exchange between the programme's partner institutions.

A big thank you to KTU Kauno technologijos universitetas/Kaunas University of Technology for hosting the Inhabitat MSc students and staff! 💙

Here's a snapshot from the two weeks in Kaunas!

🌱 From Ecoprise in Portugal to Lithuania

Following the projects selected from the first round, we are now introducing two more Portuguese projects developed during the 2nd round of the Ecoprise course that have been selected to participate in the upcoming Ecoprise workshop in Lithuania.

Meet Jardim dos Sentidos and Farol Agroecológico Origens, two projects exploring how regeneration can create new ecological, social, cultural and economic value within local territories.

🌸 Tessitoras da Matria – Jardim dos Sentidos | Augusta Barbosa

In Vimieiro, Arraiolos, this project proposes a 3.76-hectare regenerative territorial ecosystem combining agroecology, biodiversity, local knowledge, education and technology. Conceived as a living laboratory, Jardim dos Sentidos aims to demonstrate how economic activity can emerge from the regeneration of a territory rather than its extraction.

🌾 Farol Agroecológico Origens | Humberto Mendes

Building on the regenerative laboratory Origens in Viseu, this project proposes the creation of an Agroecological Lighthouse, a space for experimentation, innovation and knowledge sharing. Starting with a community-supported agriculture model, the initiative aims to restore degraded ecosystems, strengthen community connections and develop sustainable and locally rooted food systems.

🌧️ The results are in! Two weeks ago, we asked:
Which change is most likely to increase surface runoff after heavy rainfall?

The majority of you chose more paved surfaces:
→ 85% on LinkedIn
→ 80% on Instagram
→ 66.7% on X
And that's the correct answer!

When rain reaches the ground, some of the water can infiltrate into the soil, while some can move across the land surface as runoff. Paved surfaces are largely impermeable, limiting the opportunity for water to enter the soil and affecting the way water moves across the landscape.

This is closely related to soil sealing. The European Commission’s European Soil Data Centre (ESDAC) defines soil sealing as the covering of the soil surface with impervious materials as a result of urban development and infrastructure construction. It also notes that surrounding soils can be affected by changes in water-flow patterns.

Understanding how rainfall interacts with different land surfaces is an important part of studying hydrological systems. These processes connect with topics explored through Hydrological and Climate Variability in the Ecolution MSc.

Thanks to everyone who took part in the quiz! 🌱
