Health is the lighting issue that people consider most important. But how much do they really know about it?
In our study, 40% of respondents ranked health as the most relevant lighting issue. So the awareness is there. However, there is a gap when it comes to factual knowledge:
• Questions about mental health were answered well, with an accuracy rate of 77%.
• Questions about long-term physical effects—on the eyes and chronic diseases—performed significantly worse, at 58%.
Many people sense that light affects sleep. However, the underlying physiological mechanisms—non-visual photoreceptors, melatonin suppression and shifts in the circadian rhythm—are barely understood. Links to metabolic disorders, obesity and certain types of cancer, which are increasingly supported by epidemiological evidence, have also not yet entered public awareness.
For practitioners, this means that health is a strong conversation starter—the relevance is already recognised. However, it needs to be translated into specific, relatable connections that people can understand and experience. Simply explaining the mechanisms does not go far enough.
