Can you add a lock to a cabinet that never had one?
We hear this question a lot. The answer is yes, in most cases. This week we did exactly that for a resident in City Walk Building 15.
They had a few kitchen and storage cabinets holding passports, documents and things they'd rather keep private. Guests come and go, and sometimes so do helpers and maintenance teams. A simple lock on each cabinet was all they needed.
Here's how it went:
We checked the thickness of each cabinet door
We picked the right spot so the lock wouldn't hit the hinges or shelves
We fitted a small cam lock into each door, drilled cleanly
We tested every key and made sure each door still closed flush
The best part of a cam lock is how little space it takes. From the outside you only see a small, neat keyhole, and the cabinet looks the same as before.
One small tip we gave the resident: never keep the spare key inside the cabinet it opens. It sounds obvious, but it happens more than you'd think.
We fit cabinet and cupboard locks every week in homes around JBR and Palm Jumeirah, so we know how most built-in furniture in Dubai is made. Mr. Locksmith has more than 15 years of experience, and every lock is tested before we leave.
