Before energizing any electrical panel, check these 10 things.
A few minutes of proper inspection can prevent equipment failure, downtime, and serious safety incidents.
As electrical engineers, we should never treat energization as a routine step.
It is one of the most important moments at site.
Before switching ON, always verify:
Approved drawings and documents
Make sure you are following the latest approved drawings, schematics, cable schedules, and datasheets.
Panel and equipment condition
Check installation quality, cleanliness, labeling, IP rating, and any visible damage.
Earthing system
Verify earthing connections, continuity, bonding, and earth resistance test results.
Cables and terminations
Check cable size, lugging, ferruling, gland tightness, termination torque, and cable dressing.
Insulation resistance test
Confirm IR test results are acceptable and recorded properly.
Continuity and polarity
Verify continuity of power, control, and earthing circuits. Confirm correct polarity where applicable.
Protection settings
Check breaker ratings, relay settings, interlocks, and coordination with upstream and downstream devices.
Functional operation
Test indicators, meters, push buttons, alarms, controls, and interlocks.
Foreign objects inside the panel
Ensure no tools, loose parts, cable pieces, dust, or debris are left inside.
